Bruce Pearl hasn’t even officially left Auburn basketball, when fans already saw his political future written on the wall. After 11 years of building a championship contender, the timing of his departure had supporters convinced they know what comes next: A run for political office.
Bruce Pearl Steps Down as Steven Takes Auburn Reins
ESPN reporter Jeff Borzello broke the news on social media, writing: “BREAKING: Bruce Pearl is expected to retire as the head coach at Auburn, sources tell me and @PeteThamel. His son, Steven, is expected to be the head coach for the upcoming season.”

Auburn officially confirmed Pearl’s retirement about an hour later, with Pearl releasing a video message from his office captioned: “Dear Auburn Family, I truly love you.”
The 65-year-old coach will step down from his head coaching role but remain with the university as special assistant to the athletics director, serving as an ambassador.
In his official statement, Pearl said: “I have been at this for almost 50 years and truthfully as hard as it is for me to say this, I have come to the realization that it’s time for me to step aside. Being the head coach at Auburn has been the privilege of my life. Auburn Family, I love you and I hope you understand that for me, it is time. Brandy and I are looking forward to the opportunity to continue serving the Auburn Family – just, in a new capacity.”

The move concludes Pearl’s 11-year tenure, which transformed Auburn into a national powerhouse. Pearl finished with a 246-125 record as the program’s winningest coach.
Pearl’s final season delivered Auburn’s greatest campaign in program history. The Tigers posted a 32-6 record, claimed the SEC regular season championship, and earned their first-ever No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. Auburn reached the Final Four before falling to Florida 79-73, concluding a season that saw Pearl named Co-AP Coach of the Year.
Steven Pearl, 38, worked his way up through the program over 11 years, from strength coach to associate head coach. He served as Auburn’s defensive coordinator and played a key role in transfer portal recruiting, landing players like Johni Broome and Denver Jones.
His extensive experience within the Auburn system positions him to take over the program seamlessly. The transition will keep the Pearl family legacy intact at Auburn, with Steven having overseen the elite defense during their historic Final Four run.
Will Bruce Pearl Run for Political Office After Coaching?
Social media erupted with speculation about Pearl’s political ambitions after his retirement announcement began circulating without any official confirmation. The reaction suggests fans view his coaching departure as preparation for a campaign.
A user thought, “and he’s about to run for office.”

Fan reactions like these make sense considering Pearl’s active social media presence on political topics. The coach regularly posts about current events and policy issues, so his followers know where he stands politically and see his engagement with these matters.
However, the fan speculation contrasts sharply with recent reporting on Pearl’s political intentions.
Just two weeks before the retirement news, Jewish Insider reported that sources close to Pearl indicated he was “unlikely to enter the contest” for Senate, though they stressed “the Auburn coach has not officially decided against running yet.”
The report also revealed, “Bruce Pearl, Auburn University’s men’s basketball coach, is leaning against running to replace outgoing Sen. Tommy Tuberville but is giving himself until the end of the month to make a final decision.”
Pearl’s official retirement announcement makes clear he’s chosen Auburn over politics. His decision to remain with the university in an ambassador role rather than pursue a Senate campaign appears to settle the speculation that had been building throughout the summer, despite fans’ immediate assumptions that coaching retirement meant political ambitions.
Auburn fans now wait to see Pearl transition into his new ambassador role while his son continues the family’s basketball dynasty.
