Andy Roddick is urging fellow American Tommy Paul to prioritize his health as he continues to battle a string of injuries that have plagued his 2025 season. On his podcast, ‘Served’, Roddick said Paul would be better off seeking treatment or surgery immediately rather than pushing through the pain and risking further setbacks heading into the new year.
What Advice Did Andy Roddick Give Tommy Paul About His Injuries?
Paul’s struggles have been complex to ignore this season, particularly for American tennis fans who saw him break into the Top 10 and establish himself as one of the most consistent performers on tour.
Roddick made his feelings clear on how Paul should handle the situation. “Tommy has had a bunch of injuries. I don’t know if there’s a surgical. If he has to get healthy, I would just rip the band-aid off and do it sooner rather than later,” Roddick said on the podcast.
“I hope he doesn’t play through average health through the finish line of this year. That’s when it kind of bleeds into the next year. If there’s anything to be done, any procedures to be done, I hope he does it now and just gets it out of the way.”
The injury woes first surfaced during Roland Garros, where abdominal and adductor pain limited his movement. The issue lingered, forcing him to withdraw from the Queen’s Club Championships, where he was the defending champion, and disrupted his build-up to Wimbledon.

To make matters worse, he suffered a ruptured tendon in his foot during Wimbledon, which left him in a boot and later a cast for much of the summer. Although he managed to return in time for the US Open, his preparation was severely compromised. The abdominal injury never fully healed, causing him to withdraw from Davis Cup duties for the United States.
What Results Has Paul Managed To Deliver This Season?
Paul is still searching for his first title of the year. His best results have come at the Majors and on clay, where he has built on his strong 2024 campaign. Paul started the season brightly at the Australian Open, reaching the quarterfinals.
He carried that momentum into the clay swing, producing one of the biggest highlights of his career at Roland Garros. He became the first American man since Andre Agassi in 2003 to make the quarterfinals in Paris.
The Italian Open in Rome was another tournament that showcased his progress. Paul scored notable wins against players such as Alex de Minaur, Hubert Hurkacz and Tomáš Macháč to reach the semifinals, where Jannik Sinner stopped him.
These results and other solid clay-court showings propelled him into the ATP top 10 for the first time, reaching a career-high world No. 8 ranking in June 2025. Despite this rise, he has yet to lift a trophy this season, with his deep runs ending before the final hurdle.
