Mark Petchey supports Emma Raducanu's controversial decision to skip the BJK Cup Finals and prioritizing WTA ranking points.

The tennis world erupted when Emma Raducanu made a shocking announcement that divided fans and officials. What Did Mark Petchey Say About Emma Raducanu’s BJK Cup Withdrawal?

Mark Petchey joined Raducanu’s coaching team in an informal capacity in March 2024, stepping in after Nick Cavaday’s departure following the 2025 Australian Open. The partnership with Petchey, a former British No. 1 and respected commentator, began as a short-term arrangement due to his broadcasting commitments.

Following the controversy surrounding Raducanu’s decision, Petchey stepped forward to justify her choice to skip the BJK Cup. In a recent interview, Petchey offered strong support for his former player.

“To be fair to Emma, when you look back at what she achieved on the clay against France, she proved that when she’s put up against it, she can A, produce the goods and B does want to play. I don’t think you can blame Emma for a schedule that makes zero sense,” Petchey said.

However, Petchey couldn’t commit to a full-time coaching role because of his television work. Raducanu sought a permanent solution, ultimately hiring Rafael Nadal’s former coach Francisco Roig on a contract until the end of 2025. Despite no longer being her coach, Petchey acknowledged that he would have supported the decision even if he were still in that role.

“For me when I was with her and before Francisco took over the reins full time, it was a 50-50 call for me in that regard. If you’re asking me personally, from a purely selfish point of view of wanting to be in the best position for Australia, I would tell her not to play,” he said, clarifying his position on the controversial decision.

Petchey also acknowledged the public relations challenges of such a choice. He mentioned that from a PR point of view, people will not take it well, while emphasizing the importance of getting seeded in tournaments for long-term career success.

Why Did Emma Raducanu Choose the Korea Open Over the BJK Cup?

Raducanu shocked the tennis world by withdrawing from Great Britain’s squad for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen, China. The British No. 1 was originally named in captain Anne Keothavong’s team alongside Katie Boulter, Sonay Kartal, and Jodie Burrage for what many considered a crucial competition. World No. 85 Francesca Jones has now replaced Raducanu as the fourth member of the squad.

Instead of representing her country, Raducanu accepted a wildcard to compete in the Korea Open in Seoul from September 15-21. The decision came after 2025 US Open finalist Amanda Anisimova recently withdrew from the tournament due to an injury from her run at Flushing Meadows, creating an opportunity for Raducanu.

The timing makes the decision particularly controversial. Raducanu led her country to the semifinals at the BJK Cup last year, where she won all three singles matches she played, claiming the only point in their defeat to Slovakia. Rather than prioritizing the women’s tennis equivalent of the World Cup, Raducanu chose to focus on accumulating WTA ranking points through regular tour events.

The 2021 US Open champion believes playing on the WTA Tour will better serve her long-term game development and strengthen her partnership with new coach Francisco Roig. This strategic approach reflects her commitment to building consistency and improving her world ranking through sustained tour competition rather than periodic team events.
