How Is Taylen Green Rewriting Arkansas Football History?

Redshirt senior Taylen Green isn’t just starting strong. He’s making history with performances that have fans and coaches dreaming about this team’s ceiling.

The season opener against Alabama A&M showcased Green’s potential immediately. He tied a school record with six touchdown passes in a commanding 52-7 victory, displaying remarkable poise while connecting with 10 different receivers. This balanced offensive attack represented exactly what Arkansas fans had hoped to see under offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino’s guidance.

The following week delivered even more spectacular results. Facing Arkansas State in the program’s first-ever meeting, the Razorbacks demolished their opponents 56-14. Green threw four touchdown passes, added another rushing score, and ran for a career-high 151 yards. Arkansas totaled 630 yards of offense while averaging an incredible 11.1 yards per carry.

Why Are Coaches Comparing Green to Lamar Jackson?

Beyond the impressive statistics, Green’s leadership and confidence stand out most. He’s embracing comparisons to one of college football’s all-time greats rather than shying away from the pressure. Petrino, who once coached Lamar Jackson at Louisville, sees similarities between his former Heisman Trophy winner and his current quarterback. Instead of deflecting such lofty expectations, Green has used them as fuel.

“[Bobby Petrino] sets me to that [Heisman Trophy] standard every single day,” Green explained this week. “Whether it’s my footwork, fundamentals, throwing the ball, or even in the weight room, he holds me to that standard. He sees greatness in me. He’s going to let me know when I’m not hitting that standard and when I am. So I definitely love Coach Petrino, and I have deep respect for him because every single day he demands perfection and greatness out of me.”

That mindset shows in Green’s play. Through two games, he’s accounted for 10 touchdowns and nearly 800 yards of offense. He’s playing with the freedom and speed that Arkansas desperately needed, giving the program something it hasn’t had in years: genuine hope.

The real test begins now. Arkansas faces No. 17 Ole Miss in their first SEC game of the 2025 campaign. While defensive questions remain, one thing has become crystal clear: the Razorbacks have a legitimate chance as long as Green controls the offense. Early Heisman Trophy discussions won’t disappear if his torrid start continues much longer.
