Is Christian Kirk Playing in Week 1? Latest on Texans WR’s Status vs. Rams

The Houston Texans acquired Christian Kirk as a slot and possession receiver, but his availability is questioned as he recovers from a hamstring injury.

The Houston Texans made a calculated move when they traded a 2026 seventh-round pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars for wide receiver Christian Kirk. They saw him as the reliable slot option that quarterback C.J. Stroud needed. However, their depth plans just hit an immediate snag that could test their young receiving corps right out of the gate.

Will Christian Kirk Play Against the Los Angeles Rams?

Unfortunately for Houston, Kirk won’t be suiting up for their season opener. According to Adam Schefter, the seven-year veteran is dealing with a hamstring injury that will keep him sidelined for at least a week, possibly longer.

“Texans WR Christian Kirk has a strained hamstring that is expected to sideline him for at least Sunday’s opener vs. the Rams and possibly longer, per sources,” Schefter posted. “One source estimated it to be a two-week injury for Kirk, but the Texans will be ‘cautious’ with him.”

The timing creates an interesting challenge for the Texans. Despite Kirk’s drop in production during 2023 and 2024 from his career highs of 84 receptions and 1,108 yards with eight touchdowns in 2022, Houston was in dire need of receiving help.

Tank Dell remains out for the foreseeable future as he continues recovering from the devastating knee injury he suffered in 2024, which no doubt influenced the team’s decision to acquire Kirk and draft rookies Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel.

How Will the Rookies Handle Increased Opportunities?

While Kirk’s absence creates an immediate hole, it also opens the door for the rookie receivers to prove themselves early. The team still has Pro Bowl receiver Nico Collins as their top option, but Kirk’s injury means Higgins and Noel could see expanded roles right away.

Noel appears ready for the challenge. In an interview with Arron Wilson of KPRC2, the rookie explained how wide receivers coach Ben McDaniels has prepared the entire room for exactly this type of situation.

“Coach Ben [McDaniels]’s been preparing me for this moment,” Noel said. “He’s prepared every receiver in that room to be ready if anybody goes down or whatever, just to be ready for our moment. So, whatever they need me to do on Sunday, I’m prepared to do.”

The Texans face a stiff challenge on the road against the Los Angeles Rams for their season opener. However, they remain hopeful they can generate a downfield passing attack that maximizes Stroud’s big arm and ability to create explosive plays.

Kirk’s absence may have altered their initial game plan, but it also provides an immediate opportunity to see what their young receivers can contribute when called upon.
