The coach-player connection is one of the most unique relationships in the world. Hugh Freeze, now Auburnās head coach, shares a direct tie with former NFL lineman Michael Oher. Freeze coached Oher during high school at Briarcrest Christian School in Eads, Tennessee. Later, when Oher enrolled at Ole Miss, Freeze was on staff as an assistant coach during the standout tackleās college career.
Freeze has long maintained close ties with the Tuohy family, whose relationship with Oher was central to the story depicted in ‘The Blind Side.’ This personal connection placed Freeze in proximity to both Oherās early development and the familyās influence.
The Ties Between Hugh Freeze, Michael Oher, and The Blind Side Legacy
Freezeās connection to Michael Oher dates back to Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis, Tennessee, where Freeze served as head football coach. Oher, then a homeless teenager facing academic and personal struggles, found stability through Freezeās guidance.
Freeze helped Oher develop as a football player and pushed for his acceptance at the school. This mentorship proved vital as Oher grew into a highly recruited athlete and later a college standout.
When Oher committed to Ole Miss in 2005, Freeze once again crossed paths with him. Initially recruited by head coach Ed Orgeron as assistant athletic director of football external affairs, Freeze transitioned into an assistant coaching role and later became wide receivers coach.
His time on staff overlapped with Oherās college career, cementing Freezeās role in Oherās football journey. Hollywood captured Oherās story in the 2009 film ‘The Blind Side,’ but Freeze was not directly included.
Instead, actor Ray McKinnon portrayed āCoach Cotton,ā a character loosely based on Freeze. Reflecting on the portrayal, Freeze remarked, āI sure hope Iām not as goofy as this guy, that was my reaction,ā underscoring his amusement at the dramatization.
While the film focused on Oherās rise and the Tuohy familyās support, Freezeās actual influence was largely left in the background.
In 2023, Freeze addressed the lawsuit Oher filed against Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy. Speaking to Auburn reporters, Freeze expressed sadness about the legal dispute.
āI love Michael Oher,ā Freeze said. āHeās like part of our family. I love the Tuohys. I think itās sad, and I certainly donāt claim to understand all the ins and outs of adoption, conservatory, all of that. But I know what I witnessed, and I witnessed a family that totally took in a young man. And I think without that, there is no story.ā

According to the lawsuit, Oher was placed into a conservatorship shortly after his 18th birthday in 2004. The filing argued that the arrangement allowed the Tuohys to manage Oherās finances and authorize contracts while never legally adopting him.
The dispute also pointed to profits from ‘The Blind Side,’ which grossed over $300 million and earned Sandra Bullock an Academy Award for her role as Leigh Anne Tuohy.
Oherās attorneys stated that each Tuohy family member received $225,000 and 2.5 percent of the filmās net proceeds.
