The Indiana Fever have watched their 2025 WNBA season spiral into a nightmare of injuries and disruption. What started with Caitlin Clark’s injury has snowballed into a cascade of setbacks that has forced the team to constantly shuffle their lineup as they fight to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Why Did Sophie Cunningham Defend Bria Hartley After Her Season-Ending Injury?
Sophie Cunningham’s torn MCL in her right knee represents the latest blow to the Fever’s championship aspirations. The guard suffered the season-ending injury during a collision with Connecticut Sun’s Bria Hartley on Sunday, an incident that immediately sparked controversy among fans.
The collision between Hartley and Cunningham’s knee became the center of a heated debate, with many fans accusing the Sun veteran of intentional foul play. Social media exploded with accusations that the injury was no accident, with supporters demanding a league investigation into what they viewed as dirty play.
Adding fuel to the fire, some fans claimed Hartley appeared to be smiling after causing the injury, footage that quickly went viral across social platforms. The controversy reached a boiling point when Cunningham’s mother, Paula, took to Twitter to defend her daughter with a scathing attack on Hartley in a tweet she later deleted.
“Harley is a disgruntled player having trouble everywhere she goes; she’s plain mean and plays out of control,” Paula wrote.
However, Cunningham herself stepped forward to shut down the controversy with a passionate defense of her opponent. Speaking on her podcast Show Me Something, the Fever guard made it clear that fans had gotten the situation completely wrong.
“I know Bria and I’m actually really good friends with Bria… I think there was no ill intent. It was a basketball play, I was just in the wrong spot at the wrong time, she fell. There was no way would she would go in there and intentionally try to hurt me. I have nothing but love for Bria. … There are some girls that I think might, but she wouldn’t do that,” Cunningham said.
The injured guard revealed she had to have a direct conversation with her mother after seeing the inflammatory tweets.
“I even told my mom because she tweeted something. I was like, ‘No Mom, I get it. I promise, Bria and I are super cool and she would never try to hurt me.’ There are some girls that I think might, but she wouldn’t do that,” Cunningham explained further. ” … I hope people stop giving Bria some heat.”
How Did Caitlin Clark Respond to Cunningham’s Devastating Injury?
The loss of Cunningham sent shockwaves through the Fever organization and their fanbase. With the team already battling through an exhausting string of injuries throughout the 2025 campaign, losing another key player dealt another crushing blow to their postseason ambitions.
While the team’s win total remains important, players, fans, and head coach Stephanie White have shifted their focus to supporting Cunningham through what will be a lengthy recovery process.
Clark, who has developed a close friendship with her teammate, offered her support in a simple but emotional social media post. Sharing a photo of Cunningham on her feed, the star guard wrote:
“Love you always, Soph.”
The All-Star sensation has been sidelined for multiple weeks with a right groin injury that continues to keep her off the court. While the team hasn’t established a fixed timeline for her return, they remain hopeful she can rejoin the lineup before the 2025 season concludes.
Despite the mounting challenges, the Fever currently holds the sixth position in the WNBA standings with a 19-16 record.
