Leading up to the Monterrey Open, Fernandez participated in three North American hard-court tournaments — the 2025 Citi DC Open, the Canadian Open, and the Cincinnati Open. The former World No. 13 won the title in Washington, D.C., defeating Anna Kalinskaya in the final. She was eliminated in the first round in Montreal by Maya Joint and lost to Jéssica Bouzas Maneiro in the second round in Ohio.

At the WTA 500 hard court tournament in Mexico, Fernandez is seeded seventh, and she began her campaign by defeating Jaqueline Cristian 6-3, 7-5 in the first round. Meanwhile, her sister Bianca lost 3-6, 1-6 to Antonia Ružić in the first qualifying round.

Recently, Fernandez took to social media to share a series of pictures showcasing her experience in Monterrey. She posted several photos with Bianca and even shared a video of them dressed in chic outfits and cowboy hats, dancing at the Players’ Party. She also shared a clip of Bianca altering the jeans she wore to the event.

“First few days in Monterrey 🇲🇽 🤠 💃🏽 Shoutout to @biancajolietennis for tailoring my pants in less than 2 hours… one of her many talents 🤪,” Fernandez captioned her Instagram post.

Following the conclusion of her campaign at the 2025 Monterrey Open, Fernandez will compete in the 2025 US Open. The singles event of the Grand Slam is scheduled to take place from Aug. 24 to Sept. 7 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City.

Last year, the Canadian lost in the first round to Anastasia Potapova. Her best performance at the US Open came in 2021 when she finished as the runner-up, losing to Emma Raducanu in the final.

Who Will Leylah Fernandez Face Next at Monterrey Open 2025?

Following her victory over Cristian in the first round of the 2025 Monterrey Open, Fernandez is scheduled to face Rebecca Šramková in the second round of the tournament.

In preparation for the WTA 500 hard-court event, Šramková competed at the 2025 Cincinnati Open, where she defeated Caroline Dolehide 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(1) in the first round. She then lost to 31st seed Magda Linette in the second round, with a scoreline of 6-7(4), 0-6.

At the Monterrey Open, Šramková secured her place in the second round against Fernandez by defeating wild card Victoria Rodríguez 6-3, 6-0 in the first round.

Fernandez and Šramková have never faced each other on the WTA Tour, making their upcoming match in the second round of the Monterrey Open the first encounter between them. The winner of the second-round match between Fernandez and Šramková will advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face either the wild card Alycia Parks or top seed Emma Navarro.
