Miami Dolphins running back De’Von Achane will be out for “days & weeks” with a soft tissue lower body injury, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said on Saturday.
The star running back did not take the field in the Dolphins’ 24-17 NFL preseason victory over the Detroit Lions. With this news coming out about Achane, his availability for Miami’s final preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday, August 23, is shaky.
McDaniel, though, made sure to let reporters know after the game that it seems unlikely that Achane will miss the regular season opener.
What Happened to De’Von Achane?
Cameron Wolfe, National NFL reporter for the NFL Network, offered an update on Achane’s condition on X.
“Dolphins RB De’Von Achane has a soft tissue lower body injury that will keep him out between “days & weeks”, HC Mike McDaniel told reporters in Detroit,” Wolfe wrote.
“McDaniel indicated he’s not concerned about Achane availability Week 1 vs. Colts. Similar absence timeline for DL Zach Sieler.”

ESPN Dolphins reporter Marcel-Louis Jacques added some more details around the Dolphins’ injury situation, including Achane, after the game in Detroit.
Jacques posted on X, “Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel told reporters in Detroit that DT Zach Sieler and RB De’Von Achane are out “between days and weeks” but will be reassessed in Miami this week Doesn’t sound concerned that either player will miss the start of the regular season”.
ESPN also offered some perspective on what’s going to happen with Achane out and where the Dolphins might turn to for backfield help.
“With Alexander Mattison (neck) done for the year, Jaylen Wright and rookie sixth-round pick Ollie Gordon figure to benefit from increased first-team reps as long as Achane remains sidelined,” according to ESPN.
“Wright struggled on the ground versus Detroit, rushing four times for just three yards, while Gordon turned 10 carries into 50 rushing yards, with a long run of 19 yards.”
Achane, who stands 5’9″ and weighs 191 pounds, was drafted in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M. In this preseason, Achane had three carries for 22 yards and no touchdowns.
