WTA World No. 11 Emma Navarro has made a surprising scheduling pivot, pulling out of her high-profile mixed doubles partnership with World No. 1 Jannik Sinner at the 2025 US Open.
Instead, the American star will head south of the border to compete at the Monterrey Open, a WTA 500 tournament running from Aug. 18 to 23. The move ends one of the most anticipated team-ups in the revamped US Open Fan Week showcase.
How Does Emma Navarro’s Withdrawal Impact the US Open Mixed Doubles Lineup?
The United States Tennis Association had been banking on star power for its reimagined mixed doubles event, which takes place Aug. 19 and 20 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. With $1 million prize money and 16 ATP-WTA pairings on the bill, the tournament was shaping up to be a summer highlight.

The accepted entries featured blockbuster duos such as Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Świątek and Casper Ruud, Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz, Navarro and Sinner, and Olga Danilović and Novak Djokovic, among others. Navarro’s exit marks the latest high-profile split before the first serve has even been struck.
Her withdrawal follows earlier changes to the draw. Paula Badosa, slated to partner with Jack Draper, pulled out of the tournament entirely due to an ongoing back injury. Meanwhile, World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and Grigor Dimitrov also withdrew, with the latter still recovering from a pectoral muscle injury sustained during Wimbledon.
According to a statement released by the US Open, Jannik Sinner will have until 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 17, to secure a new partner and retain direct entry, provided their combined singles ranking as of the July 28 deadline meets the requirement.
The Monterrey Open confirmed Navarro’s last-minute participation via its official X account on Aug. 15, writing: “GREAT SURPRISE! EMMA NAVARRO #11 in the world joins the main draw of the #AbiertoGNPSeguros 2025 You can’t miss it!”
The announcement confirmed her absence from the US Open mixed doubles event and redirected her late-August focus firmly toward singles competition in Mexico.

Navarro’s decision comes after her Cincinnati Open campaign ended in a shock early-round loss to German qualifier Ella Seidel. The American will be competing in Monterrey for the fifth time.
Her debut in 2020 and her return in 2022 both ended with early exits. In 2023, she notched her first victory at the tournament by defeating Leolia Jeanjean to reach the second round, where she fell to Donna Vekić.
Her strongest showing came in 2024, when she swept past Camila Osorio and Magdalena Frech to advance to the semifinals before losing to Linda Noskova in straight sets.
Sinner, meanwhile, remains active in Cincinnati, having powered through Daniel Elahi Galán, 30th seed Gabriel Diallo, Adrian Mannarino, and 23rd seed Félix Auger-Aliassime to reach the semifinals. Here he faces qualifier Terence Atmane for the first time on the ATP Tour.
The winner will move on to the final to play either second seed Carlos Alcaraz or whoever comes out on top in the quarterfinal clash between Ben Shelton and Alexander Zverev.
