Once flying under the radar at the JUCO level, Diego Pavia has rapidly emerged as the centerpiece of Vanderbilt’s football resurgence. In 2025, he delivered 28 total touchdowns and led the Commodores to their first winning season in over ten years, finishing 7-6.
Pavia’s performance peaked with a stunning upset over No. 1 Alabama, a win that helped shift conversations around NCAA eligibility. His rise has reportedly earned him a million-dollar summer payout from Vanderbilt.
Diego Pavia’s Payoff: Vanderbilt Quarterback Scores Big After Historic 2025 Season
Diego Pavia’s rise from overlooked JUCO quarterback to the face of Vanderbilt football has drawn national attention, and now, a reported $2 million payout. According to On3, Pavia is expected to earn over $2 million this season after Vanderbilt secured him last year as a transfer from New Mexico State.
“They also made sure to take care of him this offseason,” On3 reported.
The Albuquerque native began his college career at New Mexico Military Institute before joining New Mexico State, where he was named the 2023 Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year. Despite not receiving an FBS offer out of high school, Pavia’s play eventually earned him a spot at Vanderbilt for the 2024 season.
His breakout moment came during a shocking 40-35 victory over No. 1 Alabama. Pavia threw for 252 yards and added 56 on the ground as the Commodores captured their first-ever win over an AP top-five opponent. Prior to that game, Vanderbilt had been 0-60 all-time in such matchups.
Pavia has remained in the spotlight this summer. He made an appearance on Bussin With The Boys and also plays a central role in Netflix’s newly released docuseries SEC Football: Any Given Saturday.

The seven-episode series, which debuted August 5, chronicles major moments from the 2024 SEC season. Vanderbilt features in two episodes, including one focused on the Alabama upset and another on the Commodores’ November 2 win over Auburn.
Episode 7 of the series captures behind-the-scenes footage from Vanderbilt’s preparation to face Tennessee, including a now-viral interview with Pavia.
“We can beat Tennessee literally any given Saturday. They think they’re going to destroy us,” Pavia says in the documentary. He adds, “(Expletive) every single one of them dudes, you know? We’re gonna win this game at all costs.”
Head coach Clark Lea echoed the quarterback’s energy that week. In a team meeting caught by Netflix cameras, Lea told his players,
“I want to (expletive) beat Tennessee, and I need everyone to be on the same page. We’re not leaving that stadium Saturday without a win.”
But the outcome didn’t go their way. Tennessee defeated Vanderbilt 36-23 on November 30 to clinch a College Football Playoff spot. Vanderbilt travels to Neyland Stadium for a rematch with Tennessee on November 29 this season.
