Hugh Freeze enters 2025 facing rising pressure after back-to-back losing seasons, including a 5-7 finish in 2024 that left Auburn out of bowl contention. The Tigers went 2-6 in SEC play, raising questions about Freezeās quarterback decisions.
With a completely revamped QB room this season, scrutiny has only grown. Still, one bright moment emerged last year: a dramatic four-overtime victory over Texas A&M at Jordan-Hare, which offered a glimpse of promise in the Freeze era.
Auburnās QB Revamp Puts Hugh Freezeās Transfer Philosophy in Focus
With a $12 million net worth, according to Celebrity Net Worth, Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze enters his third season facing mounting expectations. After finishing 5-7 in 2024 and failing to secure a bowl bid, the pressure is on Freeze to deliver results, and fast.
Despite past public comments questioning the value of paying quarterbacks seven figures in the transfer portal, Freeze and his staff have shifted course, aggressively revamping the Tigersā quarterback room ahead of the 2025 season.
On3ās Ari Wasserman didnāt hold back in his evaluation of Auburnās struggles under Freeze, writing,
āAuburn was the best bad football team last year, but the Tigers were torpedoed by terrible quarterback play.ā
He pointed to Freezeās own role in that downfall:
āThough Freeze threw his quarterbacks under the bus during the season last year, you also have to remember that he is to blame for that after making public comments about how paying a quarterback seven figures in the transfer portal isnāt a good use of money. Are you sure about that, Hugh?ā
Auburn responded to its quarterback issues by landing three new signal-callers: Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold, Stanford transfer Ashton Daniels, and true freshman Deuce Knight. Arnold, a former Gatorade Player of the Year, is expected to lead the offense this season, while Daniels provides experienced depth and Knight looks to develop behind them.

Arnold brings more than accolades. He played in the SEC during his time with Oklahoma and left a mark that Auburn fans are hoping to see repeated. In a performance against Alabama, Arnold rushed for 131 yards on 25 attempts and completed 9 of 11 passes. His dual-threat ability could be a perfect fit for Freezeās preferred run-pass option system.
Knight, who flipped his commitment from Notre Dame to Auburn in October, is also a dual-threat quarterback. He enters the season with the understanding that a year behind Arnold could prepare him to lead the program in the future. Whether he remains patient will depend on how the season unfolds.
For Auburn fans, the past two seasons have brought disappointment and fatigue, with late-game heartbreak in the Iron Bowl and losses at home to lower-tier teams. Now, with a quarterback unit built around speed and sharp decision-making, there is hope that close losses will become signature wins.

Freeze has the pieces in place. The quarterback talent is there. But now, he must prove he can turn a strong offseason into something meaningful on the field.
