56-TD Playmaker Predicted as a Cut Candidate for Texans As Houston Aims To Figure Out Crowded Position

The Texans are predicted to cut a former Cleveland Browns running back, who recorded four-straight 1,000-rushing-yard seasons two years ago.

Following a disappointing season in 2024, the Houston Texans went all in on upgrading their offense. The Texans added Christian Kirk, Jayden Higgins, and Jaylin Noel to the receiving corps, Laken Tomlinson and Ed Ingram to the offensive line, and Nick Chubb and Woody Marks to the running back room.

Houston appears poised for a strong 2025 season now, but their running back room is now heavily crowded with JJ Taylor, Dare Ogunbowale, and Jawhar Jordan also in contention for a roster spot. PFSN expects one of the backs to be cut this season, and he’s a former Cleveland Brown.

Houston Texans Predicted To Cut Former Cleveland Browns’ RB

The Texans’ run game was below-average last season, and coupled with one of the worst offensive lines, they finished 27th in PFSN’s Offense+ metric. Investing in all positions was necessary, and one of the notable additions was Chubb, who racked up four consecutive 1,000-rushing-yard seasons with the Browns.

However, Chubb has been a shadow of himself in the past two seasons, scoring just three touchdowns in 10 games. The Browns’ fans once mentioned him in the same breath as Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly, but the injuries in the last two years have sharply derailed his career.

While he’s healthy now and attended the Texans’ minicamp, PFSN’s Jacob Infante believes he could become a cut candidate if his health issues persist.

“Injuries have slowed Nick Chubb down over the last two years,” Infante wrote. “After a successful run with the Browns, he now looks to revive his NFL career as the backup running back to Joe Mixon on the Houston Texans. He’s the favorite for their second-string role, but he’s not a lock.

“Dameon Pierce is still on the team and provides a younger power back option for Houston’s offense. They drafted Woody Marks out of USC in Round 4 this offseason, and players like JJ Taylor, Dare Ogunbowale, and Jawhar Jordan all figure to compete for a spot. If the injuries affect Chubb’s play further, he could be a surprise cut candidate.”

Chubb has said the injuries are “all behind me” and he’s “feeling as good as I have been in a long time,” but nothing is certain in football. If he doesn’t show signs of getting back to his previous form at training camp or through preseason, the Texans might not want to keep him on the roster.
