Sinner entered the 2025 Wimbledon Championships as the top seed, and began his campaign by defeating Luca Nardi, Aleksandar Vukic, and Pedro Martínez in the opening three rounds.
In the fourth round, Sinner faced 19th seed Grigor Dimitrov, who was forced to retire during the third set due to a right pectoral muscle injury, allowing the World No. 1 to advance to the quarterfinals. Here, he registered a win over 10th seed Ben Shelton and then overcame sixth seed Novak Djokovic in the semifinals, securing his place in the championship match against Alcaraz.
Meanwhile, Alcaraz, the second seed, was vying for his third consecutive title at the grass-court Grand Slam, having defeated Djokovic in the final in 2023 and 2024. This year, the Spaniard triumphed over Fabio Fognini, qualifier Oliver Tarvet, Jan-Lennard Struff, and 14th seed Andrey Rublev in the first four rounds.
In the quarterfinals, the World No. 2 overcame Cameron Norrie, and he secured his spot in the final against Sinner by defeating fifth seed Taylor Fritz in the semifinals. Despite the defeat, Alcaraz still has an 8-5 head-to-head lead over the Italian in the head-to-head between the two.
