How Did Ben Shelton Make History at Wimbledon 2025?

Ben Shelton’s 2025 Wimbledon campaign marked a breakthrough moment as the American reached his first Wimbledon quarterfinal. He became the second youngest American man to reach the quarterfinals since Andy Roddick in 2004.

Shelton’s journey through the tournament included wins in straight sets through the first three rounds. In the first round, he defeated Alex Bolt 6-4, 7-6(1), 7-6(4), recording 15 aces with his fastest serve reaching 147 mph.

His second-round match against Rinky Hijikata was suspended due to darkness, but Shelton needed just 71 seconds to complete his 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 victory the next day.

The third round saw Shelton defeat Márton Fucsovics 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-2, where he hit the second-fastest serve of the tournament at 148 mph. In the fourth round, he overcame Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(1), 7-5 in a four-set battle that tested his resilience.

His quarterfinal run ended against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who won 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-4. Despite the loss, Shelton served 14 aces with his fastest serve reaching 144 mph in the quarterfinal match, showing he belonged on tennis’s biggest stage.

Shelton entered the ATP Top 10 in June 2025, just weeks before Wimbledon began, and was seeded tenth for the tournament. This ranking reflected his rapid rise in men’s tennis and set the stage for his quarterfinal run at the All England Club.
