‘Lots of Inconsistencies’ — Chris Koclanes Gets Brutally Honest on Paige Bueckers and Wings Stars’ Roles Amid Recent Struggles

Chris Koclanes says roster inconsistencies force Dallas Wings into 'plug-and-play' mode while Paige Bueckers averages 35 minutes per game as a rookie.

Chris Koclanes walked into the media room Wednesday night with the weight of another crushing loss on his shoulders. The Dallas Wings head coach had just watched his team fall to the Chicago Sky, and the frustration was written all over his face. But even in the midst of what he calls an “abysmal” season, Koclanes refuses to give up on his players.

Why Is Chris Koclanes Still Confident Despite the Wings’ Struggles?

After Wednesday’s defeat, Koclanes didn’t hold back when he spoke with the media. “It’s just been lots of inconsistencies with our roster, right? Who is available… Just been a lot of different plug-and-play. Who is it tonight? With all that being said, still confident in this group.”

The coach made it clear he’s frustrated with the turnovers that have plagued Dallas for weeks. Yet despite all the chaos surrounding his team, Koclanes keeps coming back to the same message: he believes in this group.

So what’s driving this frustration? The Wings are leaning heavily on Paige Bueckers, who’s already logging nearly 35 minutes per game. For a rookie, that workload is tough to sustain night after night.

Meanwhile, the team desperately needs Arike Ogunbowale and DiJonai Carrington back on the court. Both veterans are sidelined with injuries: thumb and rib problems that have left gaping holes in the rotation. Dallas also needs Maddy Siegrist to step up when she returns from injury and take some pressure off Bueckers and the other overworked players. and Tyasha Harris remains out for the season.

How Are Roster Shortages Affecting the Wings’ Game Plan?

The roster problems run deeper than just missing a few key players. Dallas is down to just eight active players for almost every game, forcing the front office to sign Haley Jones just to avoid forfeiting games. While they found a way to keep competing, the urgency of that signing shows just how desperate the depth situation has become.

This reality has pushed Koclanes into what he calls “plug-and-play” mode. He’s constantly juggling lineups and shuffling minutes based on who’s available each night. It’s far from ideal, but the coach sees opportunity even in these tough circumstances, especially for his younger players.

“They’re only going to be better for living through these experiences… that’s a lot of minutes that these players have never logged and what we’re asking them to do. To shoulder the weight of scoring as well,” he said.

Take Bueckers, for example. Her numbers against the Sky (17 points, four assists on 5-of-20 shooting) don’t jump off the page, but Koclanes recognizes she’s being forced into scoring and playmaking roles that might be beyond what any rookie should handle.

The hope is that once Ogunbowale, Carrington, and Siegrist return to action, the rotation will start to look more balanced. That would take some of the enormous pressure off Bueckers and give Koclanes the depth he needs to compete consistently.
