‘They’re Operating at a National Relevance Level’ — Analyst Explains Why the Hype Around Miami Football Is Finally Justified in 2025

Analyst J.D. PicKell says Miami football is nationally relevant in 2025, thanks to elite recruiting, impact transfers, and a legit shot at the ACC title.

In recent memory, experts have begun to agree that Miami football’s momentum is more than offseason buzz. Their recruiting success this year reflects progress, but what truly matters is performance on the field. With multiple All-American contenders and key roster improvements, Miami appears poised to elevate. Most notably, they tackled last year’s defensive struggles by bringing in Corey Hetherman as the new coordinator.

Hurricanes Turn Corner: Analyst Details Why Miami Football Matters Again

The Miami Hurricanes are stepping into the 2025 season with more than hope; they carry serious national expectations. According to On3’s J.D. PicKell, the buzz around the program isn’t just nostalgia or traffic-driven hype.

“They’re operating at a national relevance level. Good for Miami,” PicKell said, signaling a clear shift in how the program is being viewed heading into 2025. PicKell put it, “The logo hasn’t let you down. Miami’s gotten better every single year.”

PicKell addressed the long-standing narrative that Miami is often overhyped due to its iconic brand.

“If Miami had the Minnesota logo, people would say, ‘Hey, better every year. Good for them,’” he said. “They just get better every year. They’ve had more success every year. They’re recruiting at a high level under Cristobal.”

Instead, the Hurricanes face intense scrutiny rooted in the glory of their early 2000s dominance. That perception, he argues, has clouded public assessment of a program that has made consistent strides under Mario Cristobal.

The Hurricanes’ offseason has only added fuel to the optimism. They brought in Georgia transfer quarterback Carson Beck, a former All-SEC performer with first-round NFL potential.

“The bet that I’m making is that Carson Beck is going to be really good, much like he was even last year at Georgia,” PicKell explained.

He emphasized that the quarterback position isn’t the only factor in Miami’s potential rise; defensive improvement is just as critical.

“If they are just better defensively, call it a four-point improvement, from 27 points down to 23 points a game allowed, they’re going to be in contention to win the ACC.”

That path is not just theoretical. ESPN’s 2025 Football Power Index ranks Miami No. 9 nationally with a projected 9.7 wins and a 46.3% chance of making the College Football Playoff.

With Cristobal now in his fourth year, PicKell believes the cultural foundation is firmly in place.

“That culture should be as installed as ever,” he said. “The guys that he recruited to Miami… they’re now the temperature setters in that locker room.”

The Hurricanes are coming off a 10–3 season that saw them narrowly miss the ACC title game after a late loss to Syracuse. Miami opens the season against Notre Dame on August 31.
