The San Francisco 49ers appear to be in a transitional phase with their wide receivers during the 2026 NFL offseason. Many rumors suggest they could be planning to move on from Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings this year.
An insider recently addressed the situation and named two replacements that they are apparently interested in targeting during free agency.
49ers Could Lose Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings Eyes Free-Agent WR Help
NFL insider Albert Breer recently provided an update on the 49ers’ concerning wide receiver situation. He speculated their plans for Aiyuk and Jennings, while also pointing out what their potential departures would mean for their positional depth.
“Brandon Aiyuk is obviously on the way out, and it sure seems like Jauan Jennings is too. The Niners will return former first-round pick Ricky Pearsall, and not a ton after that. There’s a developing young guy in Jacob Cowing, and an older vet in Demarcus Robinson. Help is needed, for sure,” explained Breer.
He apparently believes that Aiyuk and Jennings will both leave the 49ers, which would turn a position of relative strength last offseason into a major weakness this year. He followed up his report by mentioning some free-agent targets they are rumored to be interested in as potential replacements.
“Along those lines, I’ve heard they have an interest in both Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs on the free-agent market. And failing that, there’s a deep class in the draft, with Indiana’s Omar Cooper Jr. sticking out as a nice fit for San Francisco,” added Breer.
Pierce and Doubs are both expected to be available during the free agency period, as they are on expiring contracts that are reportedly unlikely to be extended by their current teams. They represent solid theoretical replacements for Aiyuk and Jennings, as they both flashed a ton of upside last season.
Pierce enjoyed a breakout season with the Indianapolis Colts last year, finishing ninth among all wide receivers in PFSN’s Impact Rankings. Doubs finished in 29th, despite playing in an extremely crowded offense for the Green Bay Packers.
Breer also mentioned that the 49ers could explore a deep wide receiver class in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft, specifically naming Cooper as someone who would fit their offensive philosophy.
Regardless of which approach they decide to use, addressing their wide receivers should be towards the top of their list of priorities during the offseason.
