Brandon Aiyuk Injury Update: Will the 49ers WR Play This Season?

Brandon Aiyuk may not play for the San Francisco 49ers again after updates indicate interest from another franchise in the injured WR.

The San Francisco 49ers secured an important victory in Week 13 after beating the Cleveland Browns 26-9, confirming their status as favorites to remain in the fierce battle for the NFC West title. Despite this win, concerns about Brandon Aiyuk’s uncertain future with the franchise after his injury persist and have become the central topic for fans.

With Week 14 being a bye, the main focus is now on the uncertainty surrounding wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, especially after recent updates on his situation.

Brandon Aiyuk Attracted Interest from the Washington Commanders

ESPN’s Nick Wagoner reports the Washington Commanders are actively pursuing the WR, largely due to his past connection with Jayden Daniels, who currently ranks 21st in the PFSN QB Impact with a C grade from college, believing they could boost the offense together.

Additionally, connections between the Commanders’ and 49ers’ front offices may facilitate negotiations. Internal issues between Aiyuk and the 49ers have persisted recently, and with contract renewal unlikely this season, this timing could improve the team’s internal environment for the remainder of the season.

It is worth noting that WR has not played since October 2024 due to a knee injury; however, even if the 49ers decide to release him, he would still be a high-level free agent. Previous reports also indicate the franchise’s discomfort with his lack of communication.

Another concern for those managing Aiyuk is his absence from meetings and refusal to participate in activities, which has distanced him from the franchise’s daily routine.

In a recent interview, General Manager John Lynch (via David Lombardi) acknowledged that there is still a chance Aiyuk could play for the 49ers this season. Still, he did not express much optimism given the current situation.

Recently, it was reported that the 49ers voided the guaranteed money in Aiyuk’s contract for next season, including an optional bonus of $24.935 million.

Following this, the WR reportedly told the NFL Players Association he did not intend to file a grievance, which could clear the way for his likely release in the upcoming offseason.

Given that Aiyuk is unlikely to return this season due to a serious knee injury and that his performance has been inconsistent, with only 374 yards and no touchdowns in seven games, his future value is highly uncertain.

Earlier this year, a lengthy contract dispute during the preseason kept Aiyuk off the training field. Ultimately, just before the current regular season began, the two sides reached a four-year, $120 million contract extension.
