San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s impending exit from the team remains one of the biggest storylines around the franchise. The wideout has been on the lookout for greener pastures for a long time, but a move has yet to materialize. Nonetheless, while his situation awaits a resolution, the Niners have to consider the future of their receiving corps.
49ers Suggested To Trade for Bills WR Keon Coleman
49ers general manager John Lynch and the front office have to bolster the wide receiver room in case Aiyuk departs. As such, Buffalo Bills wideout Keon Coleman was proposed as an ideal candidate to help fill the void that Aiyuk would leave.
Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay proposed the 49ers trading for Coleman while suggesting the Washington Commanders as the landing spot for Aiyuk.
“If Coleman is available, the San Francisco 49ers should come calling,” Kay wrote. “The Niners came into the offseason needing to reload the receiver’s room and largely accomplished that goal with an aggressive approach to free agency. The team plucked both Mike Evans and Christian Kirk off the open market, adding two proven veterans to make up for the departure of Jauan Jennings and near-certain loss of Brandon Aiyuk.”
The Niners will once again have to compete in a hyper-competitive NFC West next season, featuring the Los Angeles Rams and Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. According to PFSN’s Offense Impact Metric, the 49ers, with an impact score of 85.2, had the fourth-ranked offense in the league last year, while the Rams had the best with an impact score of 92.3.
“Despite the marquee pickups, San Francisco would be wise to add an insurance and developmental option to the mix,” Kay added. “All three of the team’s top wideouts — Evans, Kirk, and 2024 first-rounder Ricky Pearsall — are prone to injury and missed significant time last season.”
Coleman, who is currently on a four-year, $10 million rookie deal, was also sidelined for stretches with injuries in 2025, but he’s still regarded as an “ideal buy-low player.” While the receiver has put up only 67 receptions for 960 yards and 8 touchdowns in his career so far, he still has plenty of “unrealized potential.”
“The Niners are only holding six total picks in the 2026 draft, but giving up one of their four fourth-rounders for an athletic, 6’4″, 215-pound prospect with good hands and the potential to develop into a high-volume X receiver is worth the price of admission,” Kay continued. “The combination of Coleman and Pearsall would set a foundation that San Francisco can build its receiving corps around for the foreseeable future.”
The Rams bolstered their secondary with cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson, who have four Super Bowls between them. If the Niners want to contend with stacked defenses like LA’s next season, they shouldn’t hesitate to spend on offense.
