The San Francisco 49ers are literally planting flags in 2026. One international game sounds cool. But two? That’s like a statement. The NFL’s global push is legit, and the 49ers are right at the center of it.
Mexico City. Melbourne. Two continents. One season. The 49ers are about to log serious frequent flyer miles, and the league is betting big on scarlet and gold to carry the international spotlight.
The San Francisco 49ers Double Down on International Stage in 2026
On Wednesday, the NFL confirmed the Niners will play a second international game during the 2026 regular season, adding a Mexico City showcase to their already scheduled matchup in Australia. The announcement comes as part of the league’s expanded nine-game international slate for 2026, with the 49ers featured twice.
The 49ers will serve as the home team in Mexico City at Estadio Banorte, the newly renamed and renovated venue formerly known as Estadio Azteca. The opponent, date, and kickoff time will be revealed when the full schedule drops in the spring. However, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell recently indicated the game is expected in December, though Nov. 22 has surfaced as a possible early window.
Mexico remains the NFL’s largest international market outside the United States. The league is entering a three-year commitment to stage regular-season games there, reinforcing its footprint through fan engagement programs, NFL Flag development, and community initiatives. The team has been a regular in that expansion story.
The franchise played in the league’s first-ever international regular-season game in 2005 against the Arizona Cardinals, drawing more than 103,000 fans. They returned in 2022 and dismantled Arizona 38-10 on Monday Night Football.

NFL Mexico director General Arturo Olivé alluded to the league’s renewed commitment: “We are delighted to bring regular‑season NFL games back to Mexico City beginning in 2026, reaffirming our deep and long‑standing connection with fans across the country. Estadio Banorte has hosted some incredibly memorable moments in our international history, and returning here underscores our commitment to growing the sport at every level in the market.”
Meanwhile, the 49ers were previously announced as the visiting team against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia. That game, expected to be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, could headline Week 1, though official scheduling details remain pending. The Rams will be the designated home team in that contest.
49ers CEO Al Guido welcomed the return to Mexico: “We are thrilled to return to Mexico and to play in front of one of the most passionate fan bases in the league. After two unforgettable experiences in 2005 and 2022 in Mexico City, we’re excited to reunite with the Mexico faithful and look forward to the energy local fans will bring in creating a true home-field advantage for our team abroad.”
From a football standpoint, the 49ers are built for the spotlight. Under head coach Kyle Shanahan, the team finished 12-5 in a rugged NFC West despite injury turbulence. Powered by Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey, the 49ers ranked fourth in PFSN’s Offensive Impact Metric (OFFi) with an 85.2 score and a B grade.
Eight games at Levi’s Stadium. Seven true road matchups. Two international stages. The 49ers’ 2026 season isn’t just a schedule; it’s a global tour with playoff expectations attached.
