49ers Make Devastating Injury Announcement After Loss

San Francisco faces a crushing setback as another key defensive leader goes down, shaking the 49ers’ Super Bowl hopes.

While the San Francisco 49ers still sit atop the NFC West standings, the result of their recent game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was nothing short of disastrous. Not only did they lose 30-19, but they have also suffered a major roster blow.

Earlier this season, they saw defensive end Nick Bosa leave the field with an ACL tear in Week 3 against the Cardinals. Quarterback Brock Purdy suffered a toe injury, Ricky Pearsall and Brandon Aiyuk suffered knee injuries … the list doesn’t seem to end. Today, veteran linebacker Fred Warner met the same fate, breaking the team’s defensive backbone.

Can the 49ers Overcome Another Devastating Injury Blow to Their Defense?

Eight minutes were left in the first quarter when Bucs running back Rachaad White ran off to gain 10 yards. Warner attempted to take him down, but safety Ji’Ayir Brown collided with his right ankle with momentum. Brown realized what had happened and called for medical assistance without wasting time.

A cart rolled out on the field in no time, Warner’s right foot was placed in an air cast, and he headed into the locker room. 2024 NFL Draft seventh-round pick Tatum Bethune replaced him on the field. After the game, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced more bad news for the 49ers and their fans.

Tom Pelissero posted on X, “#49ers coach Kyle Shanahan confirms what was obvious on TV: All-Pro LB Fred Warner suffered a dislocated and broken ankle. He will need surgery and likely miss the rest of the season.”

A broken ankle is a serious injury. Typically, the healing time in such incidents ranges from six weeks to three months. While the actual time will depend on the severity of the injury, it will be difficult for the 49ers to recover from this loss.

Warner has been the defensive leader of the team since 2018, the year he joined the 49ers as the No. 70 overall pick. He was also in line to match Hall of Famer Patrick Willis’ tackle records for the franchise. On Sunday, he was just five tackles away from achieving the same feat.

The 49ers were off to a great start with a 3-0 record in the first three weeks of the 2025 NFL season. But each key player succumbing to injury, one after another, has left the team in a dicey situation.

PFSN’s Offense Impact (OFFi) graded them very well in the beginning games of the season. Now, they are graded C+ with an offense impact score of 77.1. All that remains to be seen is if they can bounce back from this momentum-collapsing streak and start winning again. It won’t be easy, but the chance of pulling off miracles in the NFL cannot be ruled out.
