According to NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the San Francisco 49ers and new defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, in particular, have acquired some major defensive help in the form of a recent Super Bowl champion.

San Francisco 49ers Acquire Bryce Huff From Philadelphia Eagles
Sharing the news on X, Schefter reported that the Philadelphia Eagles will be sending DE Bryce Huff to San Francisco.

As the post references, Huff signed a three-year, $51.1M deal with the Eagles last offseason, but the team has ultimately decided to part ways. The move, which will become official after June 1, sends Huff to the 49ers and will include a restructured contract.
According to ESPN, “Huff was slated to make $16.75 million in fully guaranteed money in 2025, but the Eagles will take on $9.05 million in salary, leaving the Niners to handle the remaining $7.95 million this season once the deal is completed.”
Of course, this leaves the question of what exactly the Eagles are getting in return for Huff. ESPN reported that the 49ers are prepared to send a middle-round draft pick to the Eagles, placing a value on Huff but making the deal appear pretty straightforward.
The deal makes it clear where teams view Huff at this point in his career, but there is much to be said about reuniting with Saleh, his former head coach.
Robert Saleh Defense Gets Major Boost With Huff
Landing with the 49ers means that Huff will be reunited with Saleh, who, of course, was his head coach when he was with the New York Jets for three seasons. As ESPN reports, it’s worth noting that “Huff had his best NFL season in 2023 in New York, posting a career-high 10 sacks and 68 pressures on 312 pass-rush snaps.”
Overall, that is a total of a 21.8 percent pressure rate, which, according to NFL Next Gen Stats, ranked the overall best in the NFL.
Following his breakout season, Huff signed one of the largest free-agent deals of the year with the Eagles. However, things did not work out too well in Philadelphia, as the DE finished last year with only 13 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 12 games.
Things seem to be different in San Francisco, though, where Huff brings experience on the edge. Moreover, with a move to the 49ers D-line, Huff is joining a squad that has undergone a deep makeover.
The 49ers look to add Huff to work alongside star defensive end Nick Bosa after both defensive tackles Javon Hargrave and Maliek Collins were released this offseason. All in all, the move adds further proof that the team is not looking at this season as a rebuild, but building around a roster that’s ready to contend.
