The Philadelphia Eagles rallied late to escape with a 15-12 victory over the New Orleans Saints and improve to 2-1 to start the regular season. After falling short last week, the Eagles survived their own self-inflicted wounds and secured a much-needed win on the road.

While the Eagles managed to win on Sunday, several starters suffered injuries throughout the game as well. Here’s a closer look at the Eagle’s snap count totals from the team’s comeback victory in Week 3.

    Eagles Snap Count Takeaways

    Eagles Offense

The Eagles dealt with multiple injuries along the offensive line as both Lane Johnson and Mekhi Becton exited the game in the first half. That forced Tyler Steen and Fred Johnson into action, as they both played over 70% of Philadelphia’s offensive snaps in Week 3.

Philadelphia also dealt with a plethora of injuries at wide receiver as well. A.J. Brown missed the game due to a hamstring injury, and he was joined on the sideline by Britain Covey and DeVonta Smith. Jahan Dotson shouldered the heaviest load at wide receiver — he played 58 snaps, more than any other skill position player on Philadelphia’s offense.

After playing 90% of Philadelphia’s offensive snaps in Week 2, Saquon Barkley took a slight step back against the Saints. Barkley’s workload dipped down to 82%, as Kenneth Gainwell played 18% of Philadelphia’s offensive snaps in New Orleans. Regardless of his slightly lower snap total, Barkley is still Philadelphia’s workhorse running back.

It’s funny to see safety Reed Blankenship listed along the offensive players with three snaps in Week 3. Blankenship served as the deep “running back” when the Eagles utilized victory formation and Jalen Hurts kneeled the ball three times to run out the clock.

    Eagles Defense

After being gashed on the ground during the first two games of the regular season, Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio knew it was time to change. The Eagles relied on significantly more five-man fronts and less nickel formations, which resulted in Avonte Maddox playing just 28 snaps and 51% of the team’s total defensive snaps.

Disappointing free agent addition Bryce Huff also saw his workload drastically diminished. After playing 32 defensive snaps and 52% of the team’s total defensive snaps in Week 2, Huff saw those numbers drop to 18% and 33%, respectively. Huff is now clearly the fourth edge rusher on Philadelphia’s depth chart.

While Huff saw his role reduced, Brandon Graham played a significantly bigger role in Week 3. Graham led all edge rushers with 35 defensive snaps while playing 64% of the team’s total defensive snaps. Fangio said Graham wasn’t in Philadelphia for a farewell tour and that he was going to play; that became very clear this week.

After being benched for Philadelphia’s opening drive in Week 2, Jalen Carter responded with a dominant performance. The most encouraging part about Carter’s showing was that he played a whopping 87% of the team’s defensive snaps against the Saints. Given the questions about Carter’s conditioning, he certainly had an encouraging performance.
