49ers HC Kyle Shanahan Makes Feelings Clear on Facing Shedeur Sanders, Browns QB’s Shocking Draft Slide

On Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers will face the Cleveland Browns and their new starting quarterback, Shedeur Sanders.

Kyle Shanahan grew up idolizing Deion Sanders during the 49ers’ 1994 Super Bowl run. On Sunday, he faces a reality that would have seemed impossible back then: coaching against Prime Time’s son.

Kyle Shanahan on Facing Shedeur Sanders Coming Sunday

The San Francisco 49ers head coach didn’t hide his feelings about the unique generational clash coming this weekend against the Cleveland Browns. Shanahan, whose father Mike served as offensive coordinator during Deion Sanders’ Defensive Player of the Year campaign in San Francisco, told reporters on Wednesday that the situation feels surreal.

“It is weird facing his (Deion Sanders) son because he was my hero growing up,” Shanahan said. “My wife and daughters are huge Colorado fans.”

The connection runs deep. Deion Sanders spent 14 seasons in the NFL, but his 1994 stint with the Bay remains iconic. Now, his son looks to build his own legacy after a turbulent path to the starting role.

Shedeur’s road to Sunday wasn’t the one many predicted. Despite analysts expecting him to go in the top five, he slid to the 144th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft. The Browns even selected Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel two rounds before taking Shedeur, initially placing him third on the depth chart behind Gabriel and veteran Joe Flacco.

That hierarchy shifted quickly. Following a trade that sent Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals and a concussion for Gabriel, Shedeur stepped in. After a rough NFL debut in Week 11, he settled in for his first start in Week 12. He made that opportunity count. Shedeur completed 11 of 20 passes for 209 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in a 24-10 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. With that win, he became the first Browns rookie quarterback to win his first start since 1995.

“I thought Shedeur was a good player,” Shanahan noted. “It did surprise me going a little bit later in the draft than he did.”

The rookie’s performance against Las Vegas went beyond just managing the game. He delivered several explosive moments, including a 53-yard strike to Isaiah Bond that set up Cleveland’s opening score. He also connected with Jerry Jeudy for 39 yards before a fumble ended the drive.

His biggest highlight came on a short pass to running back Dylan Sampson, which turned into a 66-yard touchdown. These plays earned him a 72.8 score with a C- grade on PFSN’s QB Impact metric.

Now, the focus shifts to Sunday. The Browns are chasing consecutive wins for the first time since December 2023. On the other sideline, San Francisco aims to secure its fourth victory in five games to stay competitive in the tight NFC West race.
