How Long Will George Kittle Be Out? Latest Injury Update on the 49ers Star

George Kittle suffered a hamstring injury in Week 1. Here's the latest on when the 49ers' start tight end could make a return this season.

George Kittle suffered an injury in the San Francisco 49ers’ Week 1 game against the Seattle Seahawks. The 49ers won the game 17-13, but their star tight end has not played since then.

The All-Pro exited the season opener in the second quarter with a hamstring injury and never returned. His recovery timeline has now been set, and it’s far from what fans or fantasy managers were hoping for.

George Kittle Injury Update

A day after the 49ers’ season opener, Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Kittle will miss “a few weeks.” San Francisco will now be without one of its key offensive weapons for at least the first month of the season, with hopes for a mid-October return.

On Tuesday, September 9, the 49ers placed Kittle on injured reserve. He’ll be out at least until Week 6, and so far, there haven’t been any further updates on his status.

“49ers are placing Pro Bowl TE George Kittle on injured reserve,” wrote NFL insider Adam Schefter. “Meaning he now will miss at least the next four games. Kittle injured his hamstring during Sunday’s win over Seattle.”

Replacing Kittle’s blocking prowess and his ability to create mismatches as a pass catcher won’t be easy. However, even without him, the 49ers have started the season 3-0.

The 49ers have had a sensational start to the season despite injuries to several key players. Kittle and Brock Purdy have each missed two games, Brandon Aiyuk is yet to make his season debut, Jauan Jennings has missed one game, and Nick Bosa suffered a season-ending injury in Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Purdy is expected to play in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, while the team will hope Kittle can make his return in Week 6 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Kittle’s Fantasy Outlook

PFSN’s Kyle Soppe wrote this about Kittle’s fantasy outlook as the 49ers star continues his recovery from the injury sustained in Week 1:

George Kittle was doing George Kittle things until he decided to do less fun George Kittle things in the Week 1 win over the Seahawks.

Early on, he caught all four of his targets and scored on an extension play to the pylon, where he flexed his athleticism and awareness. When he’s right, he’s as good as it gets at the position.

The problem is that we almost always have to navigate injuries, and that is already the case in 2024.

Kittle has played the full slate of games just once in his eight-year career and is now nursing a hamstring injury that landed him on IR ahead of Week 2, ruling him out through Week 5 at the very least.

What causes Kittle to miss time is the same mindset that makes him an elite option when active. I’m banking on him returning to take on the Buccaneers in Week 6 (for those keeping track at home, this would give him two weeks to work his way into form before National Tight End Day) and offer the type of strong production we’ve come to know and love.
