Brock Purdy Injury Update: What’s the Latest on the 49ers QB, and Will He Play in Week 9?

After appearing in just two games so far this year, will the San Francisco 49ers get Brock Purdy back in Week 9 against the New York Giants?

The San Francisco 49ers were hoping that the 2025 season could be a bounce-back year after a dreadful 2024. However, through eight weeks, despite a 5-3 record, it is hard to see the season as anything but a bounce-back. At this point, the plethora of injuries on the roster could derail their entire year.

Even though the record suggests they remain viable in the NFC, the contingency of players on the roster isn’t getting healthier by the week. Instead, it seems like a new catastrophic injury is being added every week. And all of that has happened with their starting quarterback, Brock Purdy, only playing in two games.

Will Brock Purdy Play Against the New York Giants?

A turf toe injury suffered in the season opener has caused Purdy to miss virtually the entire season. Leading the team to victory with a game-winning touchdown drive, he opened the season with 277 passing yards and two touchdowns against two interceptions.

However, he went on to miss the next two games before trying to make a return against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Even though he was able to play the entire game, it was a particularly rough outing for the former Mr. Irrelevant.

Since then, he hasn’t been on the field again, as the 49ers have tried to get by with Mac Jones handling quarterback duties. After losing two out of their last three, though, as the competition in the NFC West seemed to be catching up, the team had to eagerly anticipate their star quarterback’s return.

Unfortunately, any updates on him aren’t positive from the San Francisco perspective. Mike Garofolo of the NFL Network confirmed, “Brock Purdy will be limited today, #49ers HC Kyle Shanahan says.”

In his full quote, Shanahan made it clear that there were a few benchmarks he needed from Purdy before elevating him back into the starting lineup. “That he feels confident and ready to go based on how his toe feels.”

Shanahan wanted to make sure that when he did get back on the field, the former Pro Bowler was fully 100%. “He has to let us know how good he feels. It’s hard to know what’s going on with the toe. They’re really iffy things.”

Ultimately, he concluded, “It’s kind of a sensitive situation, and hopefully getting some reps in practice will give him that confidence that it’s better than it was last time.” From the sound of it, Week 9 against the New York Giants seems like a distant dream for Purdy to return.

Purdy was also limited in practice on Thursday, and as of now, he is not expected to play in Week 9.

Instead, the team will try to push forward with Jones and hope to get things back on track. In his absence, Jones has done a solid job of keeping things afloat, ranking 15th on PFSN’s QB Impact.

But with injuries to Fred Warner and Nick Bosa, the team is going to have to rely more heavily on the offense, making his job far tougher.
