Fastest 40-Yard Dash Times at the 2024 NFL Combine by Position

The 40-yard dash is the premier event of the 2024 NFL Combine, with no drill leading to more publicity or scrutiny for players.

As the showpiece drill, it is the test that will get replayed on airwaves for years to come, but it is the 10-yard split that is more translatable to the NFL. Due to the three-point stance, the shorter distance is more representative of the explosive speed seen on an NFL field.

Despite the advancements in the use of technology within football, the 40-yard dash is still used at the NFL Combine to assess speed and athleticism. NFL teams now have access to player tracking and real-time speed almost instantly, but the iconic drill remains at the heart of the showcase event, even if it’s less impactful for NFL Draft purposes than it once was.

Due to the media attention and fan engagement of the drill, players train for weeks before the NFL Combine in preparation, meaning as prospects have become more athletic, we now get some crazy low times.

The record holder for the drill is WR John Ross, who ran a ridiculous 4.22s in 2017. Since then, CB Kalon Barnes came close with a 4.23s in 2022, and CB DJ Turner ran a 4.26s in 2023. However, Ross’ record still stands seven years later.

However, with plenty of explosive athletes with track backgrounds at the 2024 NFL Combine, some prospects could come close to breaking the record.
