Former Georgia wide receiver Zachariah Branch was arrested in downtown Athens on Sunday morning, April 19, on two misdemeanor charges stemming from what the police report describes as a failure to move off a sidewalk outside a bar.
The arrest came four days before the 2026 NFL Draft. Will the incident affect Branch’s draft stock?
What the Police Report Says About Zachariah Branch’s Arrest
The Athens-Clarke County Police report, obtained by Dawgs247 and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, documents an incident outside Cloud Bar on Clayton Street at approximately 12:18 a.m.
According to the report, a large crowd was blocking the entrance and exit of Cloud Bar and adjacent businesses as the bar was closing for the night. Officers worked to clear the sidewalk. A separate individual was arrested first for what the reporting officer described as “engaging in a physical altercation with the bouncer of the adjacent bar, General Beauregard’s, by shoving the bouncer with both hands.” That person was cited for disorderly conduct and placed in a transport van.
The report states that after the officer returned to continue clearing the sidewalk, he gave multiple verbal commands for individuals to move. Branch did not.
“I continued to give Zachariah Branch verbal commands to move from blocking the sidewalk and advised that if he did not, he would receive a citation for blocking the sidewalk,” the reporting officer wrote. “Zachariah Branch smirked, then stepped backwards and to the right, then remained standing upon the public sidewalk, so as to obstruct, hinder, and impede free passage upon the sidewalk as well as impede free ingress/egress to or from the adjacent places of business.”
“Due to those actions and Zachariah Branch’s failure to comply with multiple verbal lawful commands, he was placed under arrest for misdemeanor obstruction of LEO and received a citation for obstructing public sidewalks,” the officer wrote.
Branch was booked at 1:26 a.m. and released at 3:44 a.m. on bonds totaling $39, according to online records. Branch was in Athens for the G-Day spring game at Sanford Stadium.
Legal Experts Call Branch’s Arrest Unnecessary
Two attorneys who spoke to FOX 5 Atlanta questioned the Athens-Clarke County Police Department’s decision to arrest Branch rather than issue a citation. Metro Atlanta trial attorney Bruce Hagen, who has no involvement in the case, called the arrest “over the line” and described it as “an absolute waste of resources.” He said that while Branch may have technically broken the law by standing on the sidewalk, the use of handcuffs rather than a citation was an officer’s personal choice.
Attorney Michael Kaufman said he wants to see the body camera footage before drawing conclusions about whether the arrest was warranted, and noted the poor timing of the incident given the draft.
Hagen told FOX 5 he would be “shocked” if the arrest affected Branch’s draft position, adding that the lesson learned might be to move more quickly when police instruct a crowd to disperse.
PFSN’s NFL Draft analyst Ian Cummings also doesn’t expect this to hurt Branch’s stock.
“Zachariah Branch’s arrest less than a week before the 2026 NFL Draft isn’t a good look at all — but a $39 bond reflects the incident’s relatively low consequence, and these types of incidents haven’t always affected NFL opinions this close to the draft,” he said.
“In 2024, Texas DT T’Vondre Sweat was arrested for a DWI just three weeks before the big event. He still went just outside the first round, at 38th overall — the top-end range of where he was expected to go. Zachariah Branch’s industry consensus ranking is 58th overall. Maybe this incident pushes him into Round 3, but his ultimate landing spot will be more a reflection of how the NFL actually values his unique skill set. Any impact set by this incident is likely to be low, if not non-existent.”
The timing is awkward. Round 1 of the 2026 NFL Draft wrapped Thursday night in Pittsburgh. Branch was not expected to be a first-round pick and did not hear his name called. He enters Day 2 projected as a Round 2 or Round 3 selection.
The production case is strong. Branch caught 81 passes for 811 yards and 6 touchdowns in his lone Georgia season after transferring from USC, breaking the program’s single-season reception record held by the late Brice Hunter (76 in 1993). He led the SEC in receptions, earned Second-Team All-SEC honors and was a Third-Team All-SEC selection at both wide receiver and all-purpose player by the conference coaches. He added 20.5 yards per kickoff return and 12.07 yards per punt return.
The draft resumes Friday night at 7 p.m. ET with Rounds 2 and 3.
