‘You Can’t Play Ball That Way’- 3x Super Bowl Winning QB Calls Out Patrick Mahomes’ Flat Super Bowl Performance

Fans had a lot of expectations from Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2024 season. After winning the last two Super Bowls, they were aiming to be the first team in NFL history to three-peat the Lombardi Trophy.

Unfortunately, the Chiefs did not play their best against the Philadelphia Eagles during the Super Bowl LIX showdown. And now, this former 3x Super Bowl champ called out Patrick Mahomes’ underwhelming performance during their 40-22 loss.

3x SB Champ Calls Out Patrick Mahomes’ Performance During Super Bowl LIX

Former NFL quarterback Steve Young made an appearance on the ‘Rich Eisen Show’ on Tuesday. During his discussion with the host, Young dissected Patrick Mahomes’ inability to lead the offense on their biggest game of the season.

The former 3x SB champ talked about how the Chiefs QB was aiming for awe-inspiring plays rather than focusing on consistency. This was the major reason, according to him, why the Chiefs struggled to get on the board during the game.

“But see the thing is, Patrick has dealt with this before. He’s the guy that has an answer. He’s mature to a point where he doesn’t have to look far down the field,” Young said. “Felt like he was looking for something great or amazing or Superman stuff like his early days.

“When really just drop it off, get it out, blitz coverage, you know, get the drop off the outlet. And they also kept getting in 3rd and long jams….You can’t play ball like that.”       (TS- 4:20 onwards)

Patrick Mahomes was not at the best of his capabilities during the Super Bowl showdown against the Eagles. Despite completing 21 of the 32 passes he attempted, the Chiefs QB could only muster 257 yards and three TDs passing. He was also intercepted twice and sacked six times, destroying the offensive momentum of Andy Reid’s team.

Tom Brady’s Former Patriots Teammate Roasts Patrick Mahomes After Super Bowl Embarrassment

Ex-Patriots QB Brian Hoyer did not mince his words while talking about Mahomes and the Chiefs after their Super Bowl loss to the Eagles.

On the ‘Quick Snap Show’, Hoyer compared Mahomes’ performance to the outstanding comeback that Tom Brady made with his team during their Super Bowl LI victory against the Falcons.

“I’ll say this, the one thing that never happened to the Patriots in all those years of Tom Brady, they never got their a***s whooped like this in the biggest game,” Hoyer said. “And when it was looking that way, when they were down 28-3….it was the greatest comeback in history.”

Brian Hoyer also expressed his shock on how a team on the verge of three-peating the Super Bowl lost in such an anti-climatic fashion. For now, the general consensus is that Mahomes still has a lot of work to do to be considered in the GOAT debate with Tom Brady.
