The New York Jets will spend the offseason trying to recover from their disastrous 2025 campaign, and running back Breece Hall is a major topic of discussion. The star finally played out his rookie contract and is set for a big payday. He’ll have many suitors on the open market, but Jets general manager Darren Mougey made a strong statement on the running back’s future.
NFL Experts React To Jets Prioritizing RB Breece Hall in Free Agency
Hall has been one of the most consistent producers on a bleak Jets roster. While the team has lacked effective schemes for years now, the running back remains a staple on offense. In his four years with the Jets, he recorded 3,398 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns on 755 carries.
He’s been similarly useful in the pass game, putting up 1,642 receiving yards and nine scores on 188 catches. He’s been a significant return on investment for New York, given that he played on a four-year deal worth $9,014,774.
But the golden days of cap space on his contract are now over, as he’ll be looking for a new deal north of $30 million. However, the notion isn’t scaring the Jets’ top brass, with GM Mougey expressing commitment to bringing the star back.
“Darren Mougey strongly suggests that they will tag Breece Hall if they can’t get a deal done by next week,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported. “He makes it clear they want to keep Hall.”

Hall will have high stock if he hits the open market, and the Jets’ intentions to retain him will be a blow to any team in need of a bell-cow running back.
“Not a surprise that Breece Hall will be taken off the market by the Jets with the Franchise Tag,” DMW Sports’ DMac Wakefield tweeted. “Shortens the option for 3 Down lead backs for the Chiefs in FA.”

“I doubt Breece Hall clears the $15M/yr he’d get with the franchise tag, so the transition tag is best,” Underdog’s Hayden Winks said. “Match whatever the best offer is on the market, which is probably in the James Cook range at the high end. That’s about 3 for $30M guaranteed.”
The Kansas City Chiefs wouldn’t be Hall’s only possible suitor in free agency; the Houston Texans also have a need at running back. This past season, they struggled with Nick Chubb and rookie Woody Marks at the position, among others.
“Had Breece Hall made it to free agency, which it appears he won’t, the Texans would have likely tried to pursue him,” The Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan M. Alexander said. “Now he appears off the market.”
“Seems like Darren Mougey is confident that Breece Hall is not going anywhere,” Jets Media posted.
It’s understandable why the Jets would want to hang on to Hall, beyond the obvious fact that he’s been one of their most productive players. The team has nothing of real value in its backfield other than the 24-year-old star. Their other options are limited to Isaiah Davis, Braelon Allen, and Khalil Herbert.
