‘Free Breece Hall From This Prison’ — NFL World Reacts to Jets Placing Franchise Tag on Star RB Before Free Agency

The New York Jets place the $14.3M franchise tag on star running back Breece Hall after failing to reach a long-term deal.

Breece Hall just had the best season of his career, and instead of rewarding him with long-term security, the New York Jets placed the franchise tag on their star running back.

Jets Place Franchise Tag on Star Running Back Breece Hall

Hall joined the New York Jets after being selected in the second round of the 202 NFL Draft. Since 2022, he has played 56 games for the New York Jets, recording 3,398 yards on 755 attempts and scoring 18 touchdowns.

After the news broke, the former Iowa State running back reacted to the news on his X account.

Several people around the league said that putting Hall on the franchise tag indicated the two sides couldn’t reach a long-term agreement. However, reporters also wrote that this was a smart move by Hall.

Hall posted on X, “Always been the type to bet on myself. Been working…see yall soon, Love.”

New York Jets Insider Connor Hughes took to X to break the news. Quoting a news source from SNY News, he wrote:

“Sources to @snytv: The #Jets will place the franchise tag ($14.293m) on RB Breece Hall. The two sides were working towards an extension, but couldn’t quite get there. The Jets expect him to play on the tag. Transition tag was originally New York’s preferred route, as discussed at the NFL Combine,” the post read.

It continued, “There were a number of teams who let it be know they planned to make a run at the RB with deals beyond $11.3m. The Jets then pivoted off of transition, to franchise: The only way to make sure Hall wasn’t going anywhere.”

“Smart move by Hall to wait. The RB market figures to spike, with Gibbs and Robinson eligible for extensions and with Walker apparently heading to free agency,” exclaimed New York Jets reporter Rich Cimini.

There was some discussion on what type of tag the Jets would use on their running back.
The primary difference is that a franchise locks a player into a higher level of compensation if the player leaves.

This costs the team more, while a transition tag allows the player to negotiate elsewhere, offering only a top-10 salary and no draft compensation if the original team declines to match an offer.

NFL Reporter James Palmer analyzed the decision to use the franchise tag rather than the transition tag.

Hall staying in New York has effects throughout the league. In particular, the Denver Broncos were reportedly in the market for a new running back. Although Denver has RJ Harvey on the books for 2026, the only other running backs on the depth chart as of now are Cody Schrader and Deuce Vaughn.

“Breece Hall officially franchised tagged. Would have been a key player to watch for the Broncos if he hit free agency. But he won’t,” wrote Broncos reporter Zac Stevens.

Earlier in the week, the Dallas Cowboys kicked off the offseason with a contract extension for running back Javonte Williams. He signed a three-year, $24 million contract extension on  Sunday.

Although most agreed that this was a smart business decision for both sides, Rotowire Fantasy Football Content Creator Luke Sawhook didn’t agree, sparking debate on X over the move, writing, “FREE BREECE HALL FROM THIS PRISON.”

Cowboys writer RJ Ochoa also reacted to the Jets tagging Hall, explaining, “The Cowboys’ deal with Javonte Williams continues to look better and better in the overall grand scheme.”

Hall is now the third player to receive the franchise tag this offseason. He joins Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts and Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens.

ESPN Insider Jeremy Fowler reported through an X post, “The Breece Hall franchise tag symbolizes a strong running back market that teams seem to be excited about based on talks at the combine. There’s high-level talent available at the position this year.”

The top running backs available in this free agent draft class include Kenneth Walker III, Najee Harris, Austin Ekeler, and Travis Etienne.
