Kim Caldwell’s contract extension and salary increase at Tennessee signal a bright future for the Lady Vols basketball program.

In her debut season as head coach of the Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team, Kim Caldwell has made an immediate and dramatic impact on the program.

After leading the team to the Sweet 16 and breaking several program records, Caldwell was rewarded with a contract extension and a significant salary increase that places her among the top earners in women’s college basketball.

Tennessee Women’s Basketball HC Kim Caldwell Joins Dawn Staley, Kim Mulkey in Exclusive Club

Following a successful first season in Knoxville, Tennessee Lady Vols HC Kim Caldwel received a contract raise from $750,000 to $1 million, solidifying her position among the elite coaches in the SEC. While her payout may not be the highest in the nation, it places her firmly in the upper tier of the SEC, where only a handful of women’s basketball coaches earn seven figures annually.

According to available reporting, Caldwell now ranks fifth in the SEC for base salary and eighth for total compensation.

Caldwell’s rise comes on the heels of a remarkable first season. She led the Lady Vols to the Sweet 16, and just two days after the team’s run ended, she agreed to a contract extension that will keep her at Tennessee through the 2029–30 season.

The extension, reportedly finalized in late June, moved her up from seventh to fifth in SEC salary rankings, though the timing of the finalization is not officially confirmed.

Tennessee Athletic Director Danny White praised Caldwell’s leadership and vision for the program.

“From our first meeting with Kim, it was clear that she is a groundbreaking innovator destined to lead the future of women’s basketball,” White said. “The promising future of Lady Vols basketball is in great hands under Kim’s leadership, setting the stage for a remarkable journey ahead.”

Caldwell’s first season was notable not only for the team’s on-court success but also for her personal achievements.

She set a new program record with 343 three-pointers and guided the Lady Vols to third place in the nation in scoring, though major statistical databases have not officially confirmed these specific statistics for the 2024–25 season.

Even more impressive, Caldwell achieved these milestones while coaching through her pregnancy and giving birth to her son in January 2025.

Despite her rapid rise, Caldwell still trails the SEC’s top earners. Dawn Staley leads the conference with an annual salary of $4 million, while Kim Mulkey earns $3.26 million.

Caldwell’s contract, however, includes a lucrative championship bonus clause, meaning she could surpass her peers if she leads the Lady Vols to a title.

This salary structure reflects the increasing competitiveness and financial investment in women’s college basketball, as programs recognize the value of top coaching talent in building successful teams.

With her new contract, Caldwell is positioned to continue shaping the future of Tennessee women’s basketball. Her early success and the university’s investment signal a renewed commitment to competing for championships and elevating the Lady Vols’ profile on the national stage.
