Flau’jae Johnson is building something bigger than basketball. The LSU star has transformed herself into a walking brand that bridges the gap between the court and the recording studio. While her on-court stats speak volumes, it’s her mother, Kia Brooks, who’s ensuring those impressive NIL deals translate into long-term wealth.
How Does Kia Brooks Manage Flau’jae Johnson’s Financial Empire?
Johnson has secured partnerships with major brands including JBL, Experian, Mercedes-Benz of Baton Rouge, Tinder, Unrivaled, Bazooka, Powerade, and Apple Cash. However, Brooks doesn’t let her daughter get carried away with the newfound wealth.
On “Club Shay Shay” with Shannon Sharpe, Johnson revealed the tough love approach her mother takes. “She cut my checks in half,” Flau’jae said of her mom. “She’s like, ‘You giving away this money, I know you are.'” Brooks stepped in as the financial gatekeeper, creating boundaries that Johnson didn’t realize she needed.
Brooks took to Instagram to add context to Johnson’s comments. In an Instagram story, she explained her role in her daughter’s career and shared that she did not take any money as salary from Johnson to manage her business and finances.
“As her mom and business manager, yes, I handle her finances, making sure she’s protected from unnecessary requests,” Brooks clarified on Instagram. “I built this empire with her, and if I don’t ask for a dime, I won’t let anyone take advantage of my child.”

Brooks has been the driving force behind not just Johnson’s finances, but her entire life trajectory. Johnson’s path hasn’t been easy. Her father, rapper Camoflauge, was tragically killed before she was born, leaving Brooks to raise her daughter alone.
That early tragedy shaped Johnson’s dual identity. Rap came naturally to her, almost like breathing. Basketball followed, transforming her life completely. Now she’s successfully blending both talents into a brand that commands attention from major corporations.
Brooks ensures her daughter doesn’t rush into decisions without careful consideration. As Johnson explains it, “She makes sure I follow through…Cause I’m working every day. But my mama, man… she’s the brains behind it.” Brooks has earned her reputation as the strategic mind behind Johnson’s success, and her influence shows in every major decision.

Why Did Johnson Choose LSU Over the WNBA Draft?
Johnson was widely considered a top prospect for the 2025 WNBA Draft. Despite being eligible and clearly talented enough to make the jump, she chose to return to LSU for another season with Kim Mulkey. The decision surprised many, especially given her impressive college resume.
Over three seasons at LSU, Johnson has started in 104 of her 106 career games. She has career averages of 14.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, shooting an efficient 46.8% from the field and 36.5% from beyond the arc. Johnson’s sophomore season saw her put up 14.9 points per game and shoot 76.9% from the free-throw line.
Last season was her statistical best, as Johnson posted an impressive 18.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game while earning AP Third-Team All-American honors. Despite those strong numbers, Johnson decided to stay. The reasoning became clear when Brooks explained the decision on “Best of Both Worlds with Flau’jae.”
“I don’t want you to miss anything,” said Brooks. “Mentally, I feel you could get stronger. These women are here trying to protect their families and how they pay their bills. So I just want it to be peaceful for you when you do go.”
That explanation sealed the deal. Johnson committed to another year in college, focusing on both her mental preparation and her continued development. After LSU finished 31-6 in the last season before falling to UCLA in the NCAA tournament, the Tigers are hungry for redemption. Johnson represents the face of that comeback effort under Mulkey’s guidance.
Brooks and Johnson clearly have their long-term vision mapped out. Rather than rushing into the professional ranks, they’re building a foundation that will sustain Johnson long after her playing days end. The combination of basketball excellence, musical talent, and smart business decisions positions Johnson for success that extends far beyond any single sport or career.

Way to go Flau’jae! I first learned of you on “The Rap Game”, and I’ve been rooting for you ever since! Best of luck to you as you return for another year @ LSU.
