How Will Emily Ward’s Championship Experience Impact LSU’s Operations?

In an official statement released Friday, the LSU Tigers announced Ward’s appointment to the operations director position, effective for the 2025-26 season.

“I’m very excited to welcome Emily Ward back to LSU in her new role as our Director of Women’s Basketball Operations,” Mulkey said in the statement. “Her experience as a National Champion and as a team captain during her playing career will be instrumental in her new role. We’re fortunate to have Emily return to our family, and I can’t wait to see her shine in this position!”

Ward’s journey from player to staff member reflects the deep connections Mulkey builds with her athletes. The Bossier City, Louisiana, native joined LSU as a freshman forward in 2019 and spent four seasons building toward the program’s ultimate goal. Her senior campaign in 2023 culminated with LSU capturing the National Championship, with Ward serving as team captain during that historic run.

The transition from championship player to behind-the-scenes leader represents a natural progression for Ward, who credits Mulkey’s influence on her development both on and off the court.

“Playing for Coach Mulkey pushed me to become the best version of myself,” Ward said about her time at LSU. “She believed in me, challenged me, and taught me what it means to lead with intensity, discipline, and heart. Not many people can say they played for a Hall of Fame coach, and now I’m honored to say I get to work with her, too.”

“To do it all at LSU, the school I’ve loved my whole life, surrounded by the best coaches, players, and fans in the country, is more than a full-circle moment,” Ward continued. “It’s another dream come true!”

Ward’s preparation for this role extends beyond her playing career. During the 2023-24 season, she gained broadcasting experience by joining Patrick Wright as a color analyst for several games, providing insights on team culture, players, and live gameplay through radio coverage.

Following graduation, Ward worked as the Director of Business Development for Louisiana Economic Development in Baton Rouge, gaining valuable administrative experience. She also completed an internship within LSU’s athletic department under Associate Athletics Director for Communications Michael Bonnette, where she handled video content for players’ social media accounts and assisted with press conferences.

What Does Kim Mulkey’s Revamped Roster Look Like for 2025-26?

Ward will step into her new role as LSU prepares for the 2025-26 seasonĀ with a significantly revamped roster that blends transfers and returning talent.

The Tigers landed a major addition in South Carolina Gamecocks transfer MiLaysia Fulwiley, who is predicted to offer much-needed speed and playmaking at the point guard position. Meanwhile, returning veterans Flau’jae Johnson and Mikaylah Williams will be expected to deliver consistency with 20-plus points per game averages.

Amiya Joyner and Kate KovalĀ are predicted to impress as part of the starting lineup. The rest of the roster includes Grace Knox, Kailyn Gilbert, Jada Richard, ZaKiyah Johnson, Divine Bourrage, Bella Hines, and Meghan Yarnevich.
