Alicia Tournebize Has One Weakness That Could Put Dawn Staley in a Tough Spot, Says Analyst

South Carolina adds French standout Alicia Tournebize, but one analyst flags a concern that could challenge Dawn Staley as SEC play ramps up.

South Carolina shook things up this week with an unexpected midseason addition, bringing in French prospect Alicia Tournebize, who is immediately eligible. The 6-foot-7 center has been playing professionally with Bourges Basket in France, which has given her a level of experience uncommon for a newcomer.

Head coach Dawn Staley earned plenty of attention for landing the highly touted French talent, a long, explosive forward known for her athleticism and ability to dunk in live action. While the move has generated excitement, one analyst cautioned that a noticeable gap in Tournebize’s game could make lineup decisions more challenging as SEC competition intensifies.

Analyst Warns About Alicia Tournebize’s Limitation Dawn Staley Must Manage

The midseason addition of Alicia Tournebize has generated significant discussion around the South Carolina Gamecocks, but one evaluator believes the move comes with a clear on-court challenge.

Basketball scout and analyst Hunter Cruse provided a detailed film-based assessment of Tournebize shortly after her signing in late December 2025, highlighting physical play as the most significant obstacle she faces in entering SEC competition.

Cruse explained that Tournebize’s background sets her apart from most first-year college players. Instead of arriving in the summer and spending months in a collegiate strength program, she joins the roster in the middle of the season.

According to Cruse, the hope is that her experience playing professionally in France will reduce the learning curve. Tournebize has competed with Bourges Basket, one of the top programs in France and a regular participant in EuroLeague competition, where she has played alongside seasoned professionals.

That resume suggests a smoother adjustment to terminology, spacing, and pace. Still, Cruse emphasized that the transition will not be easy.

He described Tournebize as an elite athlete for her size, highlighting her fluid movement, quickness off the floor, and viral in-game dunking clips as evidence of her rare physical tools. However, he identified a concern that shows up repeatedly on film.

“Right now, her biggest weakness… she doesn’t play through physicality,” Cruse said. “She’s not really playing through contact really at all. She’s more contact averse.”

Cruse cautioned that this tendency could be exposed against the physical frontcourts common across the SEC. Matchups against teams such as Texas, Oklahoma, LSU, and Kentucky will demand comfort with contact on both ends of the floor.

Staley has publicly emphasized Tournebize’s offensive touch, shooting range, rim protection, and basketball IQ, expressing excitement about her long-term fit in Columbia.

At 18 years old, Tournebize already owns an impressive international resume. At the FIBA U18 Women’s EuroBasket tournament, she averaged 12.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks while shooting 54.9 percent, helping France earn a bronze medal and a spot on the All-Star Five.

Professionally, her role with Bourges has been limited. She averaged 7.6 minutes, 2.9 points, and 1.7 rebounds in La Boulangère Wonderligue play, along with 7.3 minutes, 2.4 points, and 1.9 rebounds in EuroLeague competition.

How quickly she can translate her tools while embracing contact may determine how much she can help South Carolina as SEC play intensifies.
