Sophie Cunningham has faced constant scrutiny since sharing her controversial stance on transgender athletes competing in women’s sports last month.
As the discourse reached a fever pitch Sunday, Cunningham’s Indiana Fever co-star Caitlin Clark had an opportunity to stand by her teammate. Instead, Clark struck a diplomatic tone, triggering divided reactions across the WNBA world.
WNBA World Has Mixed Feelings About Caitlin Clark’s Response to Sophie Cunningham’s Stance on Trans Athletes
Cunningham turned heads in late July when she spoke to ESPN about her desire to “protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
While Cunningham stressed that she was taking her position out of “love,” it quickly proved divisive, with the eight-year WNBA veteran becoming an icon of sorts in the right-wing political sphere.
A day later, the narrative was amplified when Cunningham doubled down on her viewpoint, calling it “kind of common sense,” before noting that she will “never falter” in her beliefs.

When asked after Sunday’s 108-100 road loss to the Minnesota Lynx about the ever-evolving controversy, Clark issued a measured response, declining to take a definitive stance before shifting the focus back to basketball.
“I think for us, it’s not really a discussion we really have in our locker room,” Clark said. “I think it’s for leagues and the governing bodies to work with their athletes to find solutions, but our focus is on basketball.
“That’s what we talk about and how we can get wins, and obviously we didn’t do that tonight. So, we need to find an area to improve in that way.”
Upon being pressed to further react to Cunningham’s polarizing take on trans athletes’ place in women’s sports, Clark retorted, “I just answered for you.”
The three-time All-Star was promptly accused of “refusing to back” Cunningham, with many on X chiming in and taking sides on the ongoing debate.

“I will always defend Caitlin Clark every chance I get. But I’m truly sick and tired of watching her stay silent on men in women’s sports and not stand by Sophie, who’s had her back since day one. Some came to Clark’s defense, though, arguing that she shouldn’t be forced to express her personal beliefs in postgame interviews.
“They are turning on Caitlin Clark because she didn’t say trans women don’t belong in women’s sports. Good. Let them stop watching. They’re not fans & she doesn’t even like them. And it’s interesting how Sophie Cunningham hasn’t been hassled about this,” one user opined.

“I absolutely love this response from Caitlin Clark. This is a stupid question. … The Indiana Fever are facing protests at every road game now……a needless distraction.
