The debate on the inclusion of trans athletes in women’s sports has swept up the WNBA in recent weeks.
Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve has established herself as one of the strongest proponents of the stance. However, some of her old comments are not going down too well with the WNBA world.
WNBA World Reacts to Cheryl Reeve’s Old Remarks About Male Coaches in Women’s Sports
Reeve appeared on the “Good Game with Sarah Spain” podcast last month, where she advocated for more female coaches in the WNBA. Jennifer Sey, a former gymnast and founder of activist apparel brand XX-XY Athletics, shared the video on X and claimed that it showed Reeve’s hypocrisy.
“She wants no men coaching women’s sports but she’s fine with men playing women’s sports,” she wrote.

Another basketball fan criticized Reeve along similar lines.
“Hypocrisy at its finest from Coach Reeves,” they wrote.

Another fan reacted to the video, criticizing the WNBA’s approach to handling off-the-court issues in recent months.
“The WNBA is a joke. I have watched women’s sports since I was in high school. Based on how the WNBA has handled these past issues I will no longer watch the WNBA. I will still attend high school and college games, unless they follow in the footsteps on the WNBA,” they wrote.

One user claimed that Reeve’s comments did not make any sense and called out the Lynx head coach for advocating for trans athletes to be able to compete in women’s sports.
“What she says makes zero sense. This right here is called suicidal empathy. It is displayed out of fear of not being liked by everyone. It is a shallow unprincipled existence. It is not hard. Males play men’s sports and females play women’s sports. You cannot change your sex,” they wrote.

The issue of trans athletes competing in women’s sports has become a nationwide issue since Sophie Cunningham’s comments against the stance.
The Indiana Fever star sparked an intense debate with her statement. Several fans, including Sey, turned up to rallies in support of and against the cause outside of WNBA arenas last week. With the Fever facing the Las Vegas Aces later on Thursday, it will be interesting to see whether the protests continue outside Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
