‘Worst Take,’ ‘Unforgivable’ – WNBA World Blasts Super Bowl Champion Who Labeled Caitlin Clark a ‘Brat’

Fans react to T.J. Ward criticizing Caitlin Clark’s on-court demeanor amid rising tensions with other WNBA players.

Caitlin Clark’s 3rd WNBA season is drawing a lot of attention, but for the wrong reasons. Her return after an early exit in the 2025 season due to an injury was one of this season’s headliners. But the narrative surrounding the former ROTY is taking a sharp, critical turn.

Fans Defend Caitlin Clark Against T.J Ward’s Criticism

On the latest episode of the SPEAKEASY podcast, the panel clashed over Clark’s ability to handle the league’s increasingly physical nature. The debate intensified when former NFL Pro Bowl safety and Super Bowl 50 champion T.J. Ward gave a blunt critique of Clark’s on-court behavior, sparking backlash from WNBA fans across social media.

In the high-charged matchup between the Indiana Fever and the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Clark played just 20 minutes before exiting in the third quarter due to a lingering back injury. She finished the night with 19 points, 8 assists, and 1 steal on 5-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.

The 109-111 loss stung, but the real drama unfolded after Ward criticized Clark’s frequent complaints to officials and called her a “brat” and “pompous.”

“I think Caitlin’s problem is what you mentioned: she’s privileged, she’s a brat, and she’s a great player. But that’s what gets her in trouble,” said Ward.

“You don’t see these issues with Paige, Sabrina…’Cause they are nice…if you can’t fight, you better be a nice person…I think she needs to stop being so privileged, so pompous, and needs to have more manners. Be more friendly, be more sisterly.”

But the internet wasn’t happy with T.J. Ward’s assessment of Clark, and fiercely rejected his perspective.

A fan wrote, “What the Indiana Fever have done to the reputation and career of Caitlin Clark is truly [expletive] unforgivable.”

“As expected, the media has now gone to ‘Caitlin deserves it’ when she gets cheap shotted. Paige got knocked out last season. She’s not immune from hard hits. AT has cheap shotted Stewie, Candace Parker, Phee, Angel, Hiedeman… She doesn’t discriminate, just a dirty player,” tweeted another fan.

Calling out Indiana Fever’s PR team, a third fan posted, “Wow. Y’all really lost the plot. Caitlin’s teammates love her. @IndianaFever PR mess that y’all have helped create.”

Another user took to X to express his frustration and wrote, “No matter which team/player you support, Alyssa Thomas punching Caitlin Clark in neck was wrong. She did the same thing to Angel Reese last year. Is it just me, or has the word ‘privilege’ started being used a little too loosely these days? This is the worst take I have heard.”

Despite the visible contact between Thomas and Clark, no whistle blew, prompting head coach Stephanie White to label the officiating “egregious” and “absolutely unacceptable” during the post-game. The league has upgraded the non-call to a Flagrant Foul 2 and suspended Thomas for 1 game, but the attempt to sweep it under the rug is futile at this point.
As the WNBA season moves forward, Clark will face continued pressure and have to navigate her relationships across the professional basketball landscape, where exchanging blows isn’t an option.
