‘She Usually Sticks to Basketball’ – WNBA Analyst Details Caitlin Clark’s ‘Human Moment’ Amid ‘False Characterization’ by Media

Kayce Smith defends Caitlin Clark after the star guard addressed the false characterizations and intense scrutiny in a recent interview.

Caitlin Clark is barely three years into the WNBA and has spent her entire professional career under an intense media microscope. The young star has always tried to avoid commenting on off-court drama, focusing strictly on basketball.

However, her latest comments struck on a far more personal level.

Kayce Smith Backs Caitlin Clark Amid False Characterizations by Media

After USA Today’s Nancy Armour published a critical column, the Fever superstar sat down for a candid interview with ESPN’s Malika Andrews during the All-Star weekend to address the relentless wave of scrutiny surrounding her.

During the sit-down, Caitlin Clark delivered a raw, unfiltered take on the narratives surrounding her.

“There’s just like a false characterization of who I am sometimes. I get it, as a reporter or as a blogger, you can write an opinion piece, and that’s your job,” Clark said.

“But at the same time, don’t make accusations about my character and who I am when you don’t know me. Basketball is my dream, and nobody should ever try to take that away from me.”

While speaking to Brian Kilmeade on Fox & Friends, Barstool Sports analyst Kayce Smith called the three-time All-Star’s interview “one of her most human moments.”

“I think it was one of the most human moments I’ve ever seen from her,” Smith stated. “I watched her play in college. I followed her career with the Fever, and she usually just sticks to basketball,” Smith said. “She always wants to steer these conversations back to what she’s doing on the court.”

“This was a natural human moment, saying, ‘Hey, I know you have a job to do, but you simply don’t know me. Don’t put words in my mouth about my character and what I believe. Do your job, criticize my basketball, but don’t criticize me as a human being when you’ve never had a conversation with me,’ which I think most of us can understand where she’s coming from, especially a 24-year-old.”

Kilmeade reported that former President Barack Obama made a surprise appearance at WNBA All-Star practice in Chicago and advised Clark to ignore the outside “nonsense.”

“You’re great. You’re fantastic! Don’t let all this nonsense get you down,” Obama told Clark. “I always say, one of the things that was luckiest for me was I didn’t get famous until I was 45. So I was an old man. I mean, you’re my daughter’s age and to have that much burden and nonsense… so don’t lose that joy.”

Smith highlighted how hearing such reassurance from a former president must have felt incredible, especially for a young star managing an unmatched spotlight.

In front of a record-shattering crowd of nearly 20,000 fans at United Center, Clark delivered a brilliant performance, leading Team Spoon to a 129-122 victory after draining five three-pointers, three of them deep logo shots.

While there’s no question about Clark’s skill or her ability to draw crowds, her message highlights that behind the sellout arenas and historic box scores, the Fever remains devoted solely to the game.
