Wings Reportedly Make Huge Decision on Arike Ogunbowale’s Future in Dallas After Rocky Start to WNBA Season

The Dallas Wings’ selection of UConn superstar Paige Bueckers with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft sparked hopes for a franchise turnaround, but their season has quickly become a story of adversity.

At 6-13, the Wings sit second to last in the Western Conference, struggling to overcome injuries and inconsistent performances. Their challenges have set the stage for a pivotal moment in the team’s direction, with trade rumors swirling around franchise centerpiece Arike Ogunbowale.

Recent developments, however, suggest the Wings may be reluctant to part with Ogunbowale, even as the team searches for stability. The ongoing drama highlights both the pressure on Dallas to rebuild and the value the organization places on leadership and continuity.

Arike Ogunbowale’s Role and the Dallas Wings’ Uncertain Path

According to a recent update by ClutchPoints reporter Joey Mistretta, the Wings are not actively pursuing a trade for Ogunbowale, despite persistent speculation. Mistretta cited multiple sources confirming no movement toward a deal involving the All-Star guard.

“Multiple sources have told ClutchPoints that they have not heard anything about progression toward a potential Ogunbowale trade,” Mistretta wrote, adding that while some sources acknowledged the possibility of a move, none had evidence of imminent action.”

“One source said, ‘I don’t think we (Wings) want to give up on her yet.’ The general narrative seems to be that Dallas will be hesitant to move on from Ogunbowale. However, that doesn’t mean it is completely out of the question,” wrote Mistretta in his report.

Ogunbowale, drafted fifth overall by Dallas in 2019, has become the heartbeat of the franchise. Known for her explosive scoring, clutch performances, and veteran presence, she has shouldered much of the offensive responsibility in recent seasons. Her continued presence is a reminder of the team’s recent history and a potential anchor for its future.

Injury, Resilience, and the Dallas Wings’ Next Steps

This season has tested Ogunbowale in new ways. She is averaging 16.8 points, 3.9 assists, and 2.7 rebounds per game while shooting 36.3% from the field. The numbers reflect a challenging stretch, compounded by injuries. On Thursday, she missed her first game of the season due to a thumb injury suffered in a matchup against the Washington Mystics.

“Hurt her hand in that game there (vs. Washington). So just being extremely cautious and waiting for more news from the medical team on what that looks like long-term,” said Wings head coach Chris Koclanes regarding Ogunbowale.

In Ogunbowale’s absence, the Wings rallied for a 98-89 victory over the Phoenix Mercury, thanks to standout performances from Bueckers (23 points) and Aziaha James (28 points). The win showcased the team’s depth and resilience, as Dallas built a 12-point lead after the first quarter and extended it to 18 by halftime. The Mercury fought back, scoring 46 points in the second half, but could not overcome the Wings’ early dominance.

With the Wings set to face the Mercury again on Monday, July 7, the focus shifts to Ogunbowale’s availability and the team’s ability to build on its recent success. Her potential return could provide a much-needed boost as the Wings look to climb out of the Western Conference cellar and establish a foundation for the future.
