Wings HC Chris Koclanes Reveals the Truth Behind DiJonai Carrington Trade Rumors

Chris Koclanes addresses trade rumors surrounding DiJonai Carrington as speculation grows about her future in Dallas.

The WNBA trade deadline is just days away, and speculation is running wild. When the latest report suggested Dallas Wings guard DiJonai Carrington could be on the move, it sent shockwaves through the league. Fans are left questioning why the Wings would consider trading away one of their best perimeter defenders. On Friday, Wings head coach Chris Koclanes finally addressed the growing chatter.

How Is Chris Koclanes Responding to DiJonai Carrington Trade Rumors?

When asked about the reports linking Carrington to potential trade discussions, Koclanes didn’t deny the rumors outright. However, his message was clear, offering a glimpse into how the locker room is handling the mounting speculation.

“That’s pro sports,” he said. “You try to just keep that locker room together and keep that team tight. And day to day go about our business and focus on the task at hand.”

It was a measured response that sidestepped any direct confirmation while emphasizing stability in the locker room as the speculation swirls. The coach’s comments came shortly after ESPN insider Alexa Philippou set social media ablaze with her trade deadline preview about Carrington on WNBA Countdown.

“There are a few teams I’m keeping an eye on; Dallas is one of them,” Philippou reported. “They’ve already made an in-season trade to offload NaLyssa Smith. I’ve heard the name DiJonai Carrington brought up in some WNBA circles about someone who could also potentially be on the move.”

With the trade window closing on August 7 at 3 p.m. EST, fans won’t have to wait long to see whether these whispers materialize into anything concrete.

However, Carrington’s name surfacing in trade talks caught many off guard. Known for her relentless perimeter defense and energy on the floor, she’s exactly the kind of player the Wings have struggled to find consistency with all season. Shipping out that kind of defensive presence seems counterintuitive, especially for a team trying to patch its holes on that end of the court.

Why Would Dallas Consider Trading Carrington Despite Her Defensive Value?

The reality is Carrington’s fit in Dallas hasn’t unfolded as planned. Acquired on February 2, 2025, as part of a four-team trade involving the Connecticut Sun, Phoenix Mercury, and Indiana Fever, she arrived with high expectations. Yet injuries and inconsistency have disrupted her first season in Texas.

The reigning Most Improved Player missed nine straight games due to a rib injury and has since seen her scoring and shooting efficiency dip. This 2024-25 campaign, she’s averaging 10.4 points, 5.1 rebounds (a career high), shooting 35.4% from the field and 26% from deep.

She started the year in the Wings’ first five but was later moved to the bench as Koclanes searched for a winning formula amid the team’s ongoing struggles. The move to the bench wasn’t necessarily a demotion but rather a strategic adjustment as the coaching staff tried to find the right combinations.

Complicating matters further is Dallas’ active trade history this 2024-25 season. The franchise already moved Carrington’s girlfriend, NaLyssa Smith, in late June in exchange for a 2027 first-round pick from Las Vegas. They also brought in Li Yueru from Seattle in another multi-pick deal. With the front office clearly willing to shake things up, it’s no wonder Carrington’s name has surfaced now.

The Wings have shown they’re not afraid to make tough decisions when players don’t fit their long-term vision. That approach has created uncertainty throughout the roster, leaving every player wondering if they might be next.

Despite swirling trade rumors, teammate Paige Bueckers made it clear she appreciates what Carrington brings to the team. Her comments came as the speculation reached its peak.

“It’s important to have experience… just the energy and passion that she brings. You know what you’re going to get every single night from her.”

Bueckers highlighted Carrington’s experience and fiery energy, stressing how important it is to have her presence every night on the court.

Could the Golden State Valkyries Pursue Carrington?

The Golden State is one of the teams with enough flexibility to pursue Carrington before the deadline. The Valkyries currently have about $482,445 in cap space, easily enough to take on Carrington’s one-year, $200,000 guaranteed contract.

Her defensive prowess and knack for creating offense through turnovers could fit perfectly in their system, which emphasizes high-pressure defense and transition scoring. The Valkyries are building their identity around exactly the kind of intensity and defensive mindset that Carrington brings every night.

Still, teams will weigh the risks carefully. Carrington’s injury history and ongoing shooting struggles might make contenders hesitant to part with meaningful assets just days before the deadline.

For now, the Wings have just a few days to decide whether Carrington remains part of their long-term plan or becomes the next player shipped out of Dallas. Whatever happens, Koclanes is keeping his squad focused on what they can control on the court.
