Why Did WNBA Subreddit Ban Sophie Cunningham’s Name? Moderator Reveals the Reason for the Controversial Move

Why can’t fans mention Sophie Cunningham on the WNBA subreddit? A moderator explains the controversial name ban and its reasoning.

On Sunday, Sophie Cunningham celebrated her 30th birthday, and it came with an unexpected twist. On Reddit, fans who tried to discuss the Indiana Fever guard on the WNBA subreddit found that her name (and several common variations of it) were banned.

This quickly sparked backlash among users who questioned why a WNBA player’s name had effectively become off-limits in the league’s subreddit. Now, a moderator explained why the community has chosen to filter Cunningham-related posts.

Why Can’t Fans Mention Sophie Cunningham? WNBA Subreddit Moderator Breaks Down the Ban

The ban reportedly prevented users from posting variations including “Cunningham,” “Sophie,” “sc,” “scunningham,” “soph,” and “sophiacunningham.” That meant anyone hoping to discuss the Fever veteran, celebrate her birthday, or simply mention her name on the subreddit ran into the same restriction.

The timing was particularly notable because Cunningham has been at the center of two major WNBA controversies over the past two months.

In a July 21 interview with ESPN, Cunningham described herself as apolitical but said she wanted women to be protected from competing against “biological men.” Days later, she doubled down on that position, calling it “common sense” to separate men’s and women’s sports.

The debate surrounding her comments became increasingly heated, with supporters and critics taking opposing positions across social media and at WNBA games (with rallies even being held before Fever games).

Then came another controversy.

A little over a week ago, Cunningham was sent crashing to the floor after Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington made contact with her around the head and neck area. Carrington was assessed a Flagrant 2 and ejected from the game. Minutes after leaving the court, Carrington posted “White Privilege” on social media, further expanding the conversation beyond the foul itself.

Cunningham later called the play “unnecessary” and argued that race had no place in determining how the incident was penalized.

Against that backdrop, discussions about Cunningham became increasingly polarized on the WNBA subreddit. After sser Adventurous_Hope_101 questioned why the community had filtered her name, a moderator from r/WNBA responded:

“We filter content based on [Sophie] because it tends to bring out trolls and people who aren’t fans of the W,” they wrote.

The user pushed back: “But she’s a WNBA player that does have actual fans. If you can’t post about a player you’re a fan of, that seems ridiculous.”

The moderator refused to budge.

“We have chosen to filter content,” they wrote. “If you want to post freely about Sophie, you can go to a different sub.”

When told that the ban “does not make sense,” the moderator ended the discussion with this:

“You aren’t even a contributor to this sub, so I suggest you go back to the other WNBA subs. This is our decision. If you keep messaging about this, you will be banned.”

On Monday, the WNBA subreddit released a statement clarifying that basketball discussions involving Cunningham are allowed: “Sophie Cunningham content is not banned from r/wnba. Posts about Sophie are welcome when they are related to basketball, including games, highlights, interviews, statistics, marketing endorsements, and other WNBA-related news. Off-court Sophie content can be shared as well.”

However, they also added a new requirement that only users with 50 “karma” points to post so that “the subreddit will not be over-ran with trolls or brigaded.”

“And this goes for ANY new post; you must have 50 community karma to create ANY post,” they added.

The WNBA released a statement on the matter, distancing itself from the subreddit: “The WNBA does not moderate or have any affiliation with the r/WNBA subreddit.”

For Cunningham, controversy is now following her on and off the court, including all across social media.
