What’s the History Between Aerial Powers and Cheryl Reeve? All About the Fever Player’s Rumored Beef With Lynx HC

As the Indiana Fever sign Aerial Powers ahead of their clash with the Minnesota Lynx, fans revisit her rumored feud with head coach Cheryl Reeve.

The Indiana Fever’s season has been a rollercoaster, and just when it seemed like they were finding their rhythm, things took another turn. After losing three of their last five games, including a 95-90 defeat to the Minnesota Lynx on August 22, the Fever are once again searching for answers.

Injuries have been a recurring obstacle, derailing any momentum they’ve managed to build. Now, as they prepare to take on the Lynx again on August 24, fans aren’t just focused on the matchup, but they’re buzzing about the history between new Fever signing Aerial Powers and Minnesota’s head coach, Cheryl Reeve.

What Actually Happened Between Aerial Powers and Cheryl Reeve?

Just a day ago, reports confirmed that the Fever signed veteran guard Powers to a seven-day hardship contract to help cover for their depleted roster. If we see this move gives Indiana an experienced wing presence who can immediately contribute.

But it also reopens an old storyline, as Powers is now set to face the Lynx, the very team where her rumored beef with coach Reeve began. So, what exactly went down between the two?

Powers entered the WNBA in 2016 as the 5th overall pick by the Dallas Wings. After stops in Dallas and Washington, she joined the Minnesota Lynx in 2021 and by the year 2022, she had become one of the most reliable scorers of the Lynx squad.

However, her 2023 season told a different story. After suffering an ankle injury, Powers worked her way back onto the court but grew frustrated with her role as she appeared in just 20 games that season and, to her dismay, wasn’t allowed to start a single one.

The lack of opportunity led to some public frustration. Powers wasn’t shy about expressing her discontent on social media, even hinting at her desire to leave the Lynx.

“Thank you so much. I look forward to them coming to see me play next year with another organization,” wrote Powers in a tweet.

This tension only deepened when, during the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game trip, Reeve, who was seated next to Powers on a flight, reportedly switched seats. Powers later laughed about the moment during a livestream, but fans saw it as a clear sign of the frosty relationship between the two.

Fast forward to now, and the drama resurfaces as Powers suits up for Indiana. She last played in June for the Golden State Valkyries but was waived after just two games. For the Fever, however, her signing couldn’t come at a better time.

Powers’ skill set offers exactly what Indiana needs. Offensively, she can slash to the basket and score from mid-range, providing a valuable complement to Kelsey Mitchell’s perimeter shooting. This inside-outside balance could open the floor for Aliyah Boston to operate more effectively in the paint.

The game between the Fever and the Lynx will start at 7 PM ET at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
