What Happened to Paige Bueckers? Wings HC Chris Koclanes Shares Latest Injury Update on Star Rookie

Paige Bueckers exited Monday's game against the Mercury after taking a hit to the head. Coach Chris Koclanes confirmed she’s “feeling okay.”

As the Dallas Wings entered Monday night’s contest against the Phoenix Mercury, they aimed to rebound from the tough season they’ve been having so far. Instead, they were met by a strong 102-72 blowout, falling 6-14 this season.

To top off their frustration, their star guard Paige Bueckers took a hit to the head, taking her out of the game.

Paige Bueckers Suffered A Major Blow

Paige Bueckers suffered a hard blow to her head as Mercury’s Kalani Brown collided with her while going for a layup. No foul was called, but Bueckers clearly felt the impact. She was rather shaken up, rubbing her ear, trying her best to get her game back on track.

Bueckers, who contributed 11 points on 3-11 shooting from the field in 24 minutes on the court, had to exit the game after trying her best to stay in a bit longer. She also added 2 rebounds and 3 assists in the time frame. Fans were concerned about her and are thankful to Wings HC Chris Koclanes for the latest update. He said, “Yup. We talked to her here, she’s feeling okay”.

Though there is no other official health news on Bueckers, the coach’s words indicate that there’s no serious concern like a concussion, which is a big relief for Dallas.

Her injury was worrisome, as she had just returned to the court after resting for four games. Earlier, she hit her head in a game against the Chicago Sky.

All these concerns came right after Bueckers was named WNBA Rookie of the Month in June. She became the first Dallas rookie since 2019 to win the honor. Across a seven-game stretch in June, she averaged 21.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1.7 steals. She shot 47.5% from the field and 92.9% from the line.

Plus, she ranked third in scoring overall. She became the only player in the WNBA to average at least 20 points and 5 assists. Bueckers scored over 21 points in her last seven games before Monday’s contest. Even as a rookie, she has established herself as a star in Dallas.

With key players like DiJonai Carrington, Arike Ogunbowale, and Maddy Siegrist injured and sidelined, Bueckers’ injuries can pose a threat to the Wings’ future this season.

Additionally, her contributions to the league and its expansion cannot be denied. Like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, Bueckers has brought in a new wave of talent to the WNBA, bringing in more fans, exposure, and a meteoric rise in ticket sales and audiences. Staying healthy is the foundation for Bueckers to further grow her career and the league.
