‘Frontcourt Will Be Tested EARLY’ — Team USA’s Group in FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Draws Mixed Reactions Thanks to 7’3″ Opponent

Team USA's 2026 FIBA World Cup draw sparked immediate concern from observers over a massive frontcourt mismatch against China.

Team USA officially knows its path in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, and the reactions are already all over the place.

Following the group draw announcement, the United States team was placed alongside Czechia, Italy, and China for the tournament set to take place in Berlin from Sept. 4-13 featuring stars like Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, and Angel Reese.

The mix of opponents has sparked mixed reactions from the basketball world even though Team USA enters the tournament as the overwhelming favorite.

Team USA’s Group Sparks Confidence… and 1 Clear Concern

On paper, this looks like a manageable group for Team USA. America’s dominance in international women’s basketball is unmatched and anything short of another dominant run would be considered a major shock.

But Team USA fans have one concern in particular about this draw.

One content creator pointed to a very obvious weak spot. “Welp, our height in the front court will be tested EARLY,” he wrote on X.

That particular concern doesn’t come out of nowhere. China will present size and physicality challenges for Team USA’s stacked roster thanks to 7’3″ center Zhang Ziyu.

Ziyu is just 18 years old, but she was named the MVP of the 2024 FIBA Under-18 Women’s Asia Cup. She is said to be the tallest living woman, and she’s currently a pro for the Shandong Six Stars of the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association.

Team USA facing off against Ziyu became the biggest talking point on X.

“Paige don’t try taking a charge, you will land in the 5 row,” one user joked, while sharing a clip of the towering Ziyu.

Another influencer chimed in with the meme of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola looking overwhelmed.

Not everyone is all doom and gloom, though. One influencer dismissed the challenge, writing, “USA group is food, they def sleepwalking through that round. Can’t wait to see the final roster.”

The sentiment reinforces the historically justified confidence that Team USA remains levels above the competition no matter the opponent.

With the tournament being hosted in Europe for the first time since 2018 and rivals China, Italy, and Czechia continuing to improve, the margin really may not be as comfortable as it once was.

Team USA must be prepared for a physical battle in Berlin. Fans are already crossing their fingers ahead of the final roster reveal.
