When Stephanie White signed up to be head coach of the Indiana Fever in November 2024, she likely didn’t think she’d be forced to defend herself while at the center of controversy.
Yet, after Sophie Cunningham suffered a hard Flagrant 2 foul from DiJonai Carrington in the Fever’s last game, resulting in the latter’s ejection, some have accused White of not defending her team enough.
Cunningham suggested the foul was intentional. White didn’t agree when seeing it in real-time. That sparked some outrage. Now, White has reacted with fiery passion.
WNBA World Responds to Stephanie White’s Rant
On Tuesday, White addressed the media prior to the Fever’s matchup against the New York Liberty. She started off by dispelling rumors that she has any sort of issue or fractured relationship with Cunningham and her teammates.
“For those who have anything to say about the play in the last game, I didn’t see the play in real time,” White said. “I went straight to a press conference. I thought the play got called right; thankfully, Sophie’s okay. Was it egregious? Absolutely.”
Then White said she “takes personally” any suggestion that she doesn’t “100% always have [her] players’ backs,” insisting “they know that.”
White later circled back to a common theme that other critics have focused on when discussing the WNBA.
“It’s a shame that we can’t have an opportunity to talk about what great basketball they’re playing, because they are [expletive] playing,” White added. “The reality is, with me, I will always lead with love, I will always lead with grace, I will always lead with humility, and I will always lead with integrity. Doesn’t mean I’ll always get it right. I am also human.”
She’s also noticed all the outside criticism and negativity aimed at trying to “hijack” the conversations around the league, when discussions could be focused on analyzing the excellent play of a Fever team that entered Tuesday tied for first in the Eastern Conference.
“The hate, the fear-mongering, the divisiveness that’s trying to hijack our league will not win,” White continued. “It won’t win. We are united, we are connected. We will not be divided. Every day these women put their [expletive] on the line. Every day. When they go low, we go high. Love will win, grace will win, humility will win, and kindness will win. I stand by them. I will always stand by them. Everybody else can go to hell.”

White spoke with extreme passion, yet she remained calm and in control the whole way. Nevertheless, her remarks actually generated some strong criticism.
Perhaps no critic was louder than Jason Whitlock, who called for White to be fired while citing her brief use of profanity.

Meanwhile, Yahoo Sports’ Nekias Duncan noted that White appears to be getting “increasingly tired” of feeling like she has to address one controversy after another.
“Every time I thought I knew where she was going, she went elsewhere lol. Can tell she’s getting increasingly tired of all of this,” Duncan said.

Another commenter was outraged over White’s comments, calling the Fever’s head coach a “liar” while suggesting “something’s wrong!”
“Listen to her.. She AGAIN said she didn’t see the play. What was she looking at when Sophie was coming down the court basically by herself with mustard behind her? LMAO this lady is a liar. And we’ve heard about her relationship with her players in the past! Something’s wrong!!” the user speculated.
