Midway through the second quarter, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham took a hard elbow to the face from Minnesota Lynx forward Nia Coffey. The referees called a foul on Cunningham before reviewing the play.
After review, the referees confirmed that it was a defensive foul on Indiana’s 3-and-D specialist instead of an offensive foul on Coffey, a decision that sparked strong reactions from the WNBA world.

The sequence unfolded near the sideline as Coffey tried to create separation from Cunningham, who stayed attached with relentless on-ball defense. As Coffey swung her elbow to clear space, it caught Cunningham squarely in the face.
Officials immediately stopped play to review the contact for a hostile act. After multiple reviews of the play, they ruled that there was no hostile act.
Instead, Cunningham was whistled for the defensive foul, a decision that quickly ignited backlash across social media.

While some fans defended the officials’ decision, the broadcast analysts covering the Fever-Lynx matchup disagreed. In their view, Coffey should have been called for an offensive foul, arguing that the elbow created illegal contact that the referees failed to penalize.
The controversial whistle added another chapter to what has already been a turbulent stretch for Cunningham. Since publicly voicing her opposition to transgender women competing in women’s sports, the Fever guard has found herself at the center of intense public debate.
Although demonstrations outside Indiana’s recent games have remained largely peaceful, they have continued to draw significant attention.
Inside the arena, Cunningham was met with boos nearly every time she touched the ball or appeared on the video board. When the officials confirmed the foul against her following the review, large sections of the crowd applauded the decision.
Despite the controversy, Cunningham and the Fever remained focused on the task at hand as they looked to extend their winning streak to six games while ending the Lynx’s nine-game winning run.
