Sabrina Ionescu Goes Viral for Continuing To Rewrite Liberty History As New York Improves to 9-0

The New York Liberty are still perfect, and Sabrina Ionescu is still making history.

The All-Star guard led the way once again Tuesday night, dropping 22 points in an 85–66 rout of the Chicago Sky to push New York to 9–0. That’s the best start in franchise history. With her latest standout showing, Ionescu added yet another milestone to her résumé, helping the Liberty stay tied with the Minnesota Lynx atop the WNBA standings.

Sabrina Ionescu’s Stat Line Makes Franchise History in Liberty’s Blowout Win

Ionescu finished with 23 points, seven assists, four steals, and two blocks in just 27 minutes. She also posted a plus-minus of +30 — a combination that had never been achieved in Liberty history, per Statmuse.

“We want to be the best,” Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello said after the win. “To do that, you have to come to work and these players do that. I’m lucky, it makes my job and the coaches’ job easy.”

Ionescu’s first-half showing set the tone. She scored 14 points and assisted on multiple threes, including a no-look pass to Kennedy Burke for a corner triple near the end of the half. Breanna Stewart added 18 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Burke finished with 15 points and went 3-of-3 from deep.

Even without Jonquel Jones, who sat out with an ankle injury, New York was as sharp as usual. Nyara Sabally made her first career start and didn’t miss a beat, literally. She went a flawless 4-for-4 from the field, making every shot count. The Liberty came out swinging, building a 20-point lead by halftime and pushing it to a jaw-dropping 34 in the second half.

“There’s a lot of deflections, there’s a lot of tips and that can lead into steals,” Stewart said. “Especially with their two bigs, we know they’re a paint-dominant team, so we wanted to make sure they got tough, contested shots.”

The Liberty now leads the WNBA in points per game (90.4), points allowed (71.4), field goal percentage (47.8), and blocks per game (5.4). Ionescu is averaging 17.9 points, 5.2 assists, 3.8 rebounds, 1.6 steals, and 2.7 made threes.

They’ll face the Indiana Fever on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET on ABC. It could mark Caitlin Clark’s return from a quad injury, which she sustained against New York on May 24.

Despite Angel Reese’s Double-Double, Chicago Sky Could Not Keep Pace

Angel Reese led the Sky with a season-high 17 points and 11 rebounds. It marked her 30th career double-double in just her 42nd WNBA game, the fewest needed to reach that milestone in league history.

Outside of Reese, the rest of the Sky never really got going. They looked out of sync on both ends, coughing up 22 turnovers. Hailey Van Lith did knock down the first three-pointer of her WNBA career, but it came late in the fourth, long after the game had slipped away.

Tuesday was Chicago’s first full game without Courtney Vandersloot, who suffered a torn ACL in Saturday’s loss to the Fever. The Sky dropped to 2-6, now ranking near the bottom of the WNBA in both offense and defense.

Meanwhile, New York continues to separate from the pack. Even without Jones, the Liberty proved they have the depth, talent, and cohesion to contend for a second straight championship.
