‘Preserve All Records’ — Royce White’s Lawyer Threatens WNBA With Litigation After Reported Draft Ineligibility Amid Trans-Athlete Stunt

Former NBA player Royce White's lawyer has issued a warning to the WNBA amid the trans-athlete debate.

The heated trans-athlete debate continues to swarm the WNBA. In a season that had the potential to show growth in league support, criticism has taken over.

After former NBA players Enes Kanter and Royce White announced that they identify as women, the duo declared intentions to enter the 2027 WNBA draft.

Their efforts were to challenge the league’s current eligibility rules, but this stunt has raised even more questions than before.

Royce White’s Lawyer Slaps WNBA With Litigation Threat

As reported by lawyer and former U.S. representative Matt Gaetz via X, the WNBA has yet to decide on White’s draft eligibility.

“The @WNBA has not notified Royce White or our legal team of any decision on draft eligibility, as is their standard practice and policy,” he wrote. “The WNBA should preserve all records in anticipation of litigation.”

The intensifying debate in the WNBA was sparked by Sophie Cunningham expressing her opinion on the matter.

Back in July, per Hallie Grossman of ESPN, the Indiana Fever guard stated, “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”

As for White’s dilemma, many are calling his situation a publicity stunt. However, it does point to potential loopholes within the league that need clarity. The whole premise of the argument is whether athletes assigned male at birth who later transition should be able to participate in women’s sports.

However, there are some gray areas; the league does not go into detail about gender identity, nor does it provide strict guidelines.

White, now 35, played in the NBA for one season. He was a forward for the Sacramento Kings and appeared in three games. Instead of being known for his basketball career, he is now known for his controversial stunt.

This is only the beginning of a long-standing debate in the WNBA and women’s professional sports across the board. But the debate doesn’t end there – it has remained a hot topic in high school and college sports over the years.

The WNBA isn’t alone in the chaos, but this particular quarrel has sparked more outrage among fans than it has in the past. Until clear guidelines are put into place, fans shouldn’t expect this debate to be put to rest quickly.
